December 23 - Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale

Why we picked it:  I've heard that everything from Samuel Smith's is excellent.  Thought we would try a couple.

About Samuel Smith's Nut Brown Ale:  Brewed with well water (the original well at the Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the hard well water being drawn from 85 feet underground); best barley malt, yeast and aromatic hops; fermented in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ to create a relatively dry ale with rich nutty colour and palate of beech nuts, almonds and walnuts.  Best served at about 55°F (13°C).  Registered with The Vegan Society; suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Beer Advocate Score91 and 100

Ingredients: Water, malted barley, yeast, cane sugar, hops, roasted barley

  1. First of many tonight I believe. Can't believe it's already the 23rd. Happy Festivus! A few beers followed by feats of strength and the airing of grievances. Had this one a few times. Not my favorite style but still a mighty tasty beer. Not lifechanging like the porter though. And I can fit more beers on my refrigerator door with the narrow bottle style. Another Festivus Miracle!

  2. I think this is a great example of the style, but nothing exciting to me. I'm not getting much of the nutty thing happening. Maybe I should have let it warm up a bit. I still enjoyed it and would order one out if I had the chance. Solid.

  3. I have had one Nut Brown Ale before this one. And I hated it. Knowing that Sam Smith was on tap tonight, I spent the last several hours convincing myself that this might be different. I had visions of spewing the first sip across the room. Well, either I did a really good job of convincing myself or I just really like this. Again, I know nothing about nut ales, but this is far more drinkable than the one I had had previously. Anyway, I will add this to my list of Samuel Smith favorites (including Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout and their Christmas Ale). Nice choice!

  4. I enjoyed this one, though compared to the last couple nights it didn't pack a tremendous punch. It seemed more like a winter evening session beer. The almonds stood out to me the most. Giving this one a B for it blandness

  6. It's a solid brown ale but there's nothing that elevates it to the high level of some of the others. Can't believe there's only one night to go!

  8. The penultimate nite of this years 24DOB. Always makes me sad to see this adventure end. Then I remember that there is a very large and purportedly amazing gingerbread delight awaiting me on the morrow...ok, I'm happy again.
I'll say it again...Sam Smith makes incredibly solid beer. Nut brown has never been my favorite style of ale, but this is so well done that I just have to like it. The entire line takes classic styles and makes them they way they are supposed to be made. No frills, just great beer. This does not disappoint.

Prolly go for an oatmeal stout the next time I grab some Sam Smith, but certainly not sad that I had this one tonight.

  9. A nice, solid drinkable brew. I feel the need to follow up with something a little more daring, but this was a good beer, just not all that interesting. 2.5/5.

  10. Sammy Smiths was a staple for me and my friends in the mid 90's. I was really happy to revist the Nut Brown Ale since it's been quite sometime. No disappointments here! Their Oatmeal Stout is still one if my favorites.

  11. I always hated this boring flat beer. It clouded my opinion of Sam Smith for a long time and after trying it again my opinion remains exactly the same. D!

  13. this is a near perfect beer for me. nut brown's are my favorite and I don't think I've ever had a Samuel smith beer I didn't like. There are 2 nut brown beers I like more - BBC's and Avery's.

  14. Getting to this a little late. And not too happy about it. It's pretty flat but not in a Cask way, just in a boring way. Didn't finish it. On to the next one.

  15. I like Sam Smiths beer overall and this one is definitely one of the reasons why. It doesn't try to be something it isn't. It's honest, decent and upstanding. Smooth and mild but with just enough to ease and relax you.
