What Great Lakes Says About It: Do not open ‘til Christmas? Whoever coined that phrase obviously hasn’t tasted Christmas Ale’s fresh honey, cinnamon, and ginger flavors. There is a yuletides worth of holiday spice and sweet honey to you a-wassailing all season long.

Why We Picked It: Essentially, I made them. For those who haven't been bored by this info already, Southern Tier is essentially from my hometown of Jamestown, NY. (technically it the tiny little town of Lakewood, adjacent to  While I generally like to slag on J-town a bit, it still amazes me that an early(ish) pioneer in craft brewing decided to set up camp there, and I have visited the awesome brewery several times (one of the few things to do there, to be honest). I also love this brew as it is a true reflection of the area (very Swedish), plus my Swedish wife makes the referenced holiday Glögg (I had some earlier this week). Oh, as a bonus, this historically drives Bill nuts. 

What Southern Tier Says About It: Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition. 2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Why We Picked It: We always like to have Anchor Steam Merry Christmas in 24DOB as the recipe deviates probably more than most of the annual holiday brews. Others tweak in strength and amount of ingredients, but the entire taste can shift with Achor Steam. Also,note that they change that label every year and employ a different artist.

What Anchor Steam Says About It: The 2020 Anchor Christmas Ale is a one-of-a-kind, featuring the highest ABV at 7% and darkest appearance of any vintage. Yet, this year’s release is easy-drinking and approachable for everyone at a holiday gathering or virtual event.

Anchor’s 2020 Christmas Ale is silky-smooth and layered with classic holiday flavors of chocolate, toasted marshmallows and graham crackers - perfect for enjoying at the end of the meal, or around a fire with close friends. This year’s brew marks the 46th annual release of this Anchor holiday tradition. Back in 1975, Anchor released the first holiday beer in America since Prohibition. Year after year, Anchor creates a new, secret recipe with a unique hand drawn label for their Christmas Ale, but the intent with each brew remains the same: joy for the changing seasons and celebration of the newness of life. With a heavily guarded, confidential recipe, Christmas Ale is sold only from early November to mid-January.

What Bell's Says About It: This traditional Scotch Ale is rich and malty with notes of caramel and a warm finish. Certain to make any occasion festive, or at least a bit more bearable. Enjoy with the company of friends and family.

To Better Know A Brewery: Bell's Brewery, Inc. is a family-owned craft brewing company with operations in Comstock and Kalamazoo, Michigan. Bell's brews acclaimed beers such as Hopslam Ale, Oberon Ale, and Two Hearted Ale. It operates a brewpub and a store selling merchandise and homebrewing supplies at its Kalamazoo location. Begun as a homebrewing store in 1983, and producing beer since 1985, it is the oldest existing craft brewery in Michigan. As of 2019, it is the largest independently owned brewery in the state and the 7th largest craft brewery in the United States. The company owns Upper Hand Brewery, a separately operated division in Escanaba, Michigan.

Why We Picked It: A holiday brew we've never had from a brewery we like. 

What Two Roads Says About It: Two Roads Holiday Ale is inspired by the little known Biere de Noel style, a subset of Biere de Garde, both of which originated on small farmhouse breweries in the north of France. Biere de Noel, which translates as “Christmas Beer," tends to exhibit a more malty profile than a typical Biere de Garde. In its native France this special type of ale is brewed by just a handful of small breweries and is only available for the few weeks leading up to Christmas.

Why We Picked It: Boulevard and Tank 7 are one of the old school craft brew, from a time before IPA drove a massive craft brewery explosion. This first time since 2014 that it has appeared in 24DOB.

What Boulevard Says About It: When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Dec. 16 | Troegenator | Troegs Independent Brewing

Why We Picked It: Troegs has a long history in 24 Days of Beer, and it goes beyond Mad Elf. I had one not long ago on Dan's deck and it reminded me that this is an excellent brew that should be included. Plus, its a sweet label. Somehow, this seems to the 24DOB debut for doublebock.

What Troegs Says About It: MONKS HAD FASTING FIGURED OUT.No food? No problem. Just drink a Double Bock. Thick and chewy with intense notes of caramel, chocolate and dried stone fruit, ‘Nator (as we call him) serves as a tribute to this liquid bread style.

Why We Picked It: Jailbreak is an excellent Laurel-brewery where I celebrated some birthday at some point. They all blur at some point.  It usually makes an appearance in recent 24DOBs. Another high ABV brew (Sorry Adam. Your welcome Andrew.)

What Jailbreak Says About It: A traditionally crafted Belgian Dark Strong Ale with notes of plum, raisin, and figs. The deep and complex malt backbone starts sweet and finishes clean and dry. Enjoy the finest in Belgian martial artistry.

Why We Picked It: I picked this up straight from the brewery on Snowden River. A fan of the brewery and this is not one I had before. Also wanted to have lagers represented.

What Black Flag Says About It: Dark Lager brewed with flavorful German base and munich malts as well as a touch of blackprinz malt to impart a smooth flavor along with its black color. Very lightly hopped with all German hops.

Why We Picked It: Heavy Seas is a local pioneer in craft brews and always seems to sneak its way into the 24 days of beer. Pounders Pils appeared this summer; Night Swell in the 2019 Holiday edition; and Winter Storn in Holiday 2017. 

What Heavy Seas Says About It: We use nearly 3 pounds of Belgian coco nibs per barrel of Siren Niore. This imperial chcocolate stout is not shy—five weeks in bourbon barrels gives this beer its punch, and vanilla beans give it a creamy, soft sweetness. It’s well-rounded body is decidedly chocolatey—but not extraordinarily sweet. Chocolate lovers—have at it.

Why We Picked It:  I used to be pretty cool on Manor Hill (not a fan of the Grisette), but Jeremy and Bill had me give them a second look this summer with the blonde ale and then I finally visited the farm this summer. I've completely flipped and my favorite brewery to visit around here (except maybe Red Shedman).

What Manor Hill Says About It: The next in our Splendor Series, Mosaic Splendor pours a hazy gold color with a big white head. With an abundance of sweet tropical papaya, guava, and mango fruit flavors, this beer packs a punchy bitterness combined with tropical citrus aromas and a lingering fruity finish.

Why We Picked It: I pre-ordered this one when seeing a case at Maple Lawn as soon as I saw Union and double IPA (my fav style). 

What Union Says About It: The arena is oversold. The band is in the middle of a blistering set. Malt, Water, and Yeast take a break and head backstage while Hops lights another cig and sits on an amp under the spotlight. With a quick puff and the flash of a smile, the Eruption begins. Waves of flavor pour over the crowd — Pear, melon, tropical pineapple, and white grape build to a maddening crescendo followed in quick succession by black tea and a honey-like sweetness. The bombast and indulgence come to a slow lava-like ooze that sticks to the palate with a gentle, soft body as the band returns to the stage.

Why We Picked It: I love to pick up some local brews straight from the brewery. Hysteria is about 10 mins from the house and American IPAs may still be my favorite among all the growing beer styles out there.

What Hysteria Says About It: We wanted to throw it back to what got us into craft beer in the first place...nice, clean West Coast IPA's. This beer is perfect for drinking with anything, including as you cry by yourself about life.

To Better Know A Brewery: It started with a single batch and grew from there. Our passion or "uncontrollable excitement" for crafting beer that's not afraid to be beer. Three friends who more or less fancied themselves mad scientists were playing off of the inventors that came before them, so often thought of as mad for their ideas.

We've set out to create an environment drawing on the innovative, collaborative, and community driven atmosphere that makes craft beer so special. We believe a business can be a valuable part of the community and aim to elevate the lives of our patrons, offering a welcoming, (pet) friendly and encouraging taproom experience. We aim to collaborate with our friends and neighbors in the DMV area to create a truly unique product distinct to the place we call home.

Why We Picked It: Beer for breakfast again. Sure. Also, a new style from a Baltimore favorite of mine (I recommend the 51 Rye). Monument also had an appearance in 24DOB 2018 with its Pagoda Pale Ale, which received mostly middling reviews and discussion of John Quincy Adams and pay phones near the Baltimore Pagoda.

What Monument Says About It: Not a damn thing. Seriously, there are only 68 total Untapped rankings and no mention of it on the website. Even Beer Advocate doesn't mention it! I don't know if we should be excited or terrified of that fact.
