Dec. 8 | Black Chocolate Stout | Brooklyn Brewery

Why We Picked It: People like chocolate. People like stouts. I'm not either of these people but I've been told others are. Besides Brooklyn makes me think of the Hold Steady.

What Brooklyn Says About It: Originally our Brewmaster Garrett Oliver’s resume beer, Black Chocolate Stout is now a wintertime favorite among beer fans worldwide. Rich roasted malts come together to create an unmistakable dark chocolate flavor perfect for special occasions and late nights by the fire.

Style: Stout - Russian Imperial

ABV: 10%

IBU: 51

To Better Know A Brewery: The Brooklyn Brewery started with a dream to return brewing to Brooklyn, once a powerhouse of American beer production. Today our beers travel to more than half the United States and over thirty countries. Our James Beard Award-winning Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and his team brew everything from classic styles to bold experiments and collaborate with brewers, innovators and artists from around the globe. We’ve met wonderful people in remarkable places, and we can’t wait to show everyone what’s next.

  1. Had a crappy long day at work. In a crabby mood now. Wanted a nice calming beer. This was not it. Not really coffee or chocolate. Not really anything. A very run of the mill average chocolate stout. Actually, it tastes like someone took a cheap red wine and poured it into a beer.

Score - meh. Looking forward to putting the kids to bed, lighting a fire, drinking a double bourbon, reading a book, and falling asleep in a chair.

  3. I love stouts. This one has a bit too much chocolate fruit flavor for me to be one I’d pick up- but it was nice to try new things. 3/4

  4. Ok, so I didn't notice this was a Brooklyn brewery creation.
Brooklyn is one of the very early american craft beers (after flat tire and Sam Adams) that I discovered and slowly switched me from a EuroPivo snob to a craft beer enthusiast.
So, first off, I like IPAs Pilsners, ales, lagers AND I prefer the ABV in the 4%-7% range (I'm a light weight).
So immediately, I admit I am not qualified to judge.
As I have had many stouts (I was a hostage forced to drink them, but that's another story), this one is mediocre at best. I don't hate it as much as Adam did, but agree that it missed the mark.
I'm trying to isolate the faint chocolate flavor and that doesn't help this beer either.
So yeah, not a great one. Btw, I love chocolate, so I'll rate this a 2/5 lindt's

    1. It was more sour milk chocolate like Hershey’s and not so much delicious smooth chocolate like Lindt.

    2. So while responding I was googling. Have you had Teuscher? It's rated the best chocolate and I've never had it. I'm now on a quest.

  5. Whoa! Tuesday just got real! So apparently I had this 5 years ago at some fantasy baseball draft and gave it 4 stars. Was I drunk? Definitely. On a Tuesday, this is pretty much everything I don't want in a beer. Taste of pure booze slams me in the face upfront. And then just when I am expecting some nice chocolate on the backend, I get hit by some weird artificially sweet chocolate flavor. Not a fan at all. I mean I finished it and all, but I'm not going to say I like it. My only consolation is that I'm drunk. But isn't that enough? Yes, it probably is. But I could have gotten the same effect with a shot of bourbon. Which would have been just as sippable. Got to put this one at the bottom. 2 out of 5 Gil Hodges.

  6. I wish this one had more of a chocolate taste, and was a little less harsh or less boozy tasting. Ordinarily 10% ABV would be welcome but maybe Tuesday night is not the best time for a Russian Imperial Stout. I give it 3 Tsars.

  7. Boozy and a bit sweet but guess that comes with the territory. Not getting a ton of chocolate and a bit artificial tasting but certainly drinkable. Hello Tuesday night...

  8. I liked this one. Bit of a weak chocolate taste, but still an enjoyable dark stout I think. I like that brewery quite a bit.

  10. I'm definitely a big stout fan. This one is too boozy though, which is a common issue with imperial stouts. The boozy taste seemed to get stronger as I drank it. Definitely liked the other stouts more.

  11. I drank this one at 4 pm during a conference happy hour networking event (Jeremy where you with an ugly sweater?)

However, not a good choice for 4 p.m. I generally like boozey beers, but as I am not a huge fan of chocolate or stout this wasn't speaking to me. Plus, it made me want to take a nap at a time where I really couldn't take a nap.

I give 2 out of 5 Brooklyn hipsters

  12. I am not at all a fan of stouts or flavored beers, but tried to keep an open mind after enjoying the banana bread beer more than expected.

Didn’t love this one—thought chocolate didn’t come through enough though appreciated that it wasn’t super heavy.

  14. Outstanding beer. They nailed the style as far as I'm concerned. It isn't overly boozy at all in my opinion, but just enough to remind you that it is an imperial stout. It's a perfect cold weather beer. The dark chocolate is subtle and adds to the natural flavor of the beer, and is balanced by the roasted barley that isn't over done. It is a beautiful looking beer too with a nice brown head. I have high expectations for Brooklyn, and this exceeded them. This might be my favorite thus far.

  15. A true Russia Imperial Stout or something or other...? Drinking this made me think of how people in Russia have had a tough life.

    In America, you watch TV.
In Imperial Russia, TV watches YOU!

In America, big boy chases ice cream truck.
In Imperial Russia, ice cream truck chases boy.

    In America, you catch Pikachu.
In Imperial Russia, Pikachu catches YOU!

And, if this beer is any indication, in America, chocolate tastes like Godiva or Hershey's, but in Imperial Russia, chocolate tastes like an old boot. Just did not dig the flavoring on this. Booziness somewhat made up for that, but not enough. 2/5 Yakov Smirnoffs from me.

  16. I give this four nopes out of five. Brooklyn were trailblazers and they have some great beers. This is not one of them. I've had it before, so I went in with pre-conceived notions. It was worse than I remembered. It's like the scene where they are making Duff beer and proclaim that it "needs more dog." In this case, I think they said "needs more Band-Aids." Yuck.

  17. Greg -- Sorry for the late post. I consumed this beer on Tuesday evening, and I must say that I didn't mind it at all. I did not catch much chocolate flavor, which was a bit disappointing to me, but what remained was fine to me, a somewhat bitter, somewhat roasty/toasty stout that chilled me out at a time I very much needed chilling out. I split this one with my wife, and I admit I wished I had more in the fridge to keep going. Not exceptional, but decent.

  18. It’s very boozy tasting which I love. It’s pretty mediocre chocolate tasting which I don’t love. Would if drink multiple of these? Absolutely. Can I find better beers in this genre? Also absolutely

  19. Liked it quite a bit, it just drinks like the ABVs suggest. Little too much.
