Dec. 10 | Diamonds Are Forever | 3 Stars Brewing

Why We Picked It: I miss baseball (but maybe not the Nationals) and have enjoyed 3 Stars (big fan of the Peppercorn Saison).

What 3 Stars Says About It: Super crisp, easy drinking hazy pale ale that has been double dry hopped with Mosaic and Amarillo. Notes of grapefruit, tangerine zest, and oranges pop on the flavor before giving away to a clean, refreshing crispness.

Style: Pale Ale - New England

ABV: 4.5%

IBU: N/A

  1. Oh Yah!!!!
I like this one. More in my wheel house. It has a good IPA ensemble of flavors, Hoppy, Citrusy, Piney AND as a bonus (for me, I believe many of you will not agree) it's a sub 5% which to quote a member of this group, makes it a great lawnmower beer.
I have not poured this into a glass yet, so I cannot comment on the "Hazy" part.
4/5 John Beech-nut chewing, John Deere riding, Junior Brown listening lawn mowings.
This statement does not in any way condone the use of tobacco products!

  2. I like this alot. A very easy drinking beer. I could easily drink several of these sitting out by the pool on a hot day. Would buy for my fridge and drink again 4.25/5

  3. The first time I had this I was on my way to watch a World Series game in Washington. I could have sworn it was 95 years ago but I don’t remember seeing Walter Johnson pitching. Also Untappd tells me it was October 26 2019 so 14 months ago I guess. Not my favorite hazy pale ale but extra points for nostalgia.

  5. You sir are no Peppercorn Saison. But still decent - good summer beer.

  6. This is the best hazy I've ever had, hands down. Very nice beer. It has the aroma and smoothness of a hazy with a little more back end bitterness that I like in a regular pale ale. I like the hop flavors too. This is a very refreshing beer and its aftertaste is beckoning me for more.

  7. Well, I guess I'm in the minority here. I was very excited. A hazy IPA from 3 Stars that I hadn't had. Sure seemed promising. Big fan of the Peppercorn Saison and the untappd records indicate that I have had many fabulous 3 Stars over the years. Definitely hazy. First sip I got a bit of grapefruit. And by a sip, I mean I was held down by a crate of grapefruits and forcibly juiced. I like grapefruit. I like grapefruit beers. But this is way too much. Also seemed to have an unholy level of carbonation. And it's only 4.5%? What kind of training beer is this? At my age, I don't have time for slightly fermented fruit juices. Ro loves it by the way. I swore she'd hate it since she hates all hazy IPAs with a hint of citrus, but not this one. Odd. I give this one 2 out of 5 Sarasota Orioles.

  8. I had this around 4 when my day was winding down and my kids are getting on my nerves. Perhaps it was enabled by the situation, but that first sip bordered on a religious experience. It didn't sustain that level of refreshing deliciousness, but it was still a spectacular experience. In part, its because this was a very little hazy to me and just drank like a slightly fruity pale ale. I sometimes like some good hazy funk, but this didn't have and I didn't miss it. I give it 4.5 out of 5 Scherzer blue eyes.

  9. I’m a solid fan of fruity beers...but this was actually too strongly fruited for me. Fun to try but too heavy on the fruit I’d say.

  10. This went down so quickly I didn't know what happened to it. If only there was baseball to go along with it. Jay, I liked your comment because for some reason this beer made me think of drinks before Nats games, back in the good old days of leaving work at 10:30am for our annual Weather Day game...

  11. This was one of my favorites of the bunch so far. Lower alcohol, big flavor- what’s not to love? Mine seemed a little overly carbonated and foamed up like crazy upon first opening and pouring. But it settled down.

  12. Yes, this really is one of the best so far. I am a big fan of the hazy and I really wanted another. It went to quickly. I have never heard of this brewery before. Maybe someday a trip to DC would be a great idea. Definitely going to be purchasing more of this.

  13. Greg -- So I appreciate the shouts out to the Nats on the can, and I typically love sours and fruited beers, but this one sadly missed my mark. I've had beers that adeptly handle and present grapefruit, but this one ain't one of them: too strong, and dare I say clashing with the hops choices? Then again, going back to the Mosaic Splendor, perhaps I'm learning I just don't like Mosaic hops (?) Regarding the haze, I noticed there was an absurd amount of silty sediment at the bottom of the can when I rinsed it out for the recycling bin (that's neither good nor bad, just surprising).

  14. Probably recipe for this beer:

Water from my Christmas tree stand
    Pop rocks
    Alcohol
    Del Monte Tropical Fruit cup

I guess what I am trying to say is that I did not care for this beer very much. I actually thought I was really going to like this, but between the CRAZY carbonation, the beer tasting like a tree, and feeling like I was getting beat about the nose with a fruit basket, I just was not a fan.

I'll just say it - the Nats reference ay not have helped. Anyway, 2.0/5.0 juicy fruits from me.

  15. I drank this while continuously stirring risotto. I’m generally not a pale ale fan but I rather liked this one. Very easy to drink and didn’t have to feel bad about it with the low ABV. Did it improve my risotto making? unfortunately not.
