Dec. 14 | K Kapowski Amber Ale | Black Flag Brewing

Why We Picked It: The Save By The Bell reference seemed to go over pretty well this summer with Z Morris, so why not K Kapowski. Sorry fellow SBTB fans, but I will probably draw a line if they come out with a S Powers beer.

What Black Flag Says About It: Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Style: Lager - Amber

ABV: 4.8%

IBU: 20

To Better Know A Brewery: See yesterday. They are a modest crew (and really need a new website)

  1. Thanks for posting this early for those of us who drank it yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I'm not usually a fan of ambers (although I do like brunettes). Usually I find them to be too malty. But this is lighter in body (I guess since it is technically a lager) and has a bit of almost tropicalness and a bit of a hoppy kick. It is odd that they seem to have no description of the beer on either the website or untappd so not sure what the intention is, but I certainly approve. And Ro was also a big fan and ambers/marzens/oktoberfests are her favorite beers so I guess it wasn't too tropical. Low alcohol as well if one is into that sort of thing. Big year for Kelly. Saved by the Bell reunion and she's hosting some show involving food youtube videos on MTV I think that keeps showing up in ads during whatever horrendous television my children are watching. This is the first new beer I've had this time that makes me want to go buy a sixer. 4 out of 5 Bayside Tigers.

  2. Have not had the beer yet, but after seeing Scott's message above I went to check out the website. Ouch. Clearly a GravCMS drag/drop thing.

Scott, only if there was some company in Columbia that would allow them to "unleash" their potential through the use of "technology" .... too bad their isn't.

    1. For my actual review this is more my kind of beer. This one was lighter then what I was expecting and a little sweeter. I actually got more malt and maybe even a little banana bread flavor which I liked. As a drank it became a little to sweet for me.

3.75 out of 5 bayside tigers.

The new saved by the bell reunion is actually not bad. Its a little bit of a “woke” reboot but is self aware enough to make fun of that fact. it also has a lot of good callbacks to the original show with some good interactions from he original cast.

    2. Yeah, we actually discussed going after breweries, but their margins and IT budget are so small...

  3. This is pretty good. Nothing too exciting. Just an easy drinking amber. I could definitely have a couple and be happy. Just as happy as I was back in high school watching Kelly sing in "Zack Attack".

  4. Full disclosure - until Bill’s comments yesterday I had no idea what “K Kapowski” was a reference to. I Googled it but I still don’t think I’m up to speed on the Saved by the Bell Cinematic Universe. But I like the beer. The last amber I had was too sweet but this one is much better. I may revisit it in the summer when I’m looking for a lighter beer.

    1. Also the actress who played that characters name is - Tiffani Amber Thiessen .... hence the ‘amber’ ale.

    2. Am I seriously the only one who watched Saved by the Bell reruns religiously in my late twenties? Okay, no one answer that. Not to mention that Tiffani Amber Thiessen was Valerie Malone on 90210! Which I also watched all of. But then again, I watch a lot of Bravo now.

    3. I'm right there with you on SBTB reruns. Perfect mind numbing television. Although, Ive also become a fan of the Zach Morris is Trash breakdowns on Funny or Die.

  5. I to had no idea what the name was (as I didn't for the one this summer) I know what SBTB is, but never really watched it. Could be my age, but most likely living abroad (as in overseas) during my teen years.
To the beer: enjoyable. It is actually right in my fav space, low ABV, in the lighter hues and slightly bitter. I can drink a few of these and chill.
But once again, nothing makes this memorable. I honestly can not identify any individual flavor in this one and it's a little over carbonated.

  6. Solid easy drinking beer - no complaints. Liked that it was a bit hoppy for an amber. This would be a great summer beer at a show.

  7. Totally unremarkable beer.

Also, don't remember a single thing about saved by the bell. Probably watched 100 hours of it. Getting old.

  8. I like this beer. Not a ton of flavor, but quite refreshing with nothing off about it. I would be willing to go through a few in a row. You know, for the team. I think this is what used to be called a 'nut brown' back in my day, but maybe not. Whatever it is called, it is quite pleasant but unremarkable. Which is totally fine.

  9. Greg -- "Meh" sums it up well. Not bad, not good. Drinkable and unoffensive. Ambery maltiness with not much else. The SBTB hook is the only talking point worth raising.

  10. I like Tiffani Amber and amber is a fine birthstone and a pleasant color. However, as a beer, amber just bore me. I guess this slightly better than most, but still a sort of sweet beer that does nothing for me.

The best thing about this beer is it gives me hopes of a Jessie beer (a red), a Lisa beer (a fashionable hazy IPA), Slater (a strong double), a Belding (old school pilsner),... Sadly, I could keep going.

I give this one 2.6 out of 5 the Max diners.

  11. Simple, easy, efficient. There's nothing special about this one, but nothing offensive. I call Sierra Summerfest "BEER." It's everything you'd want when you just want a basic beer. While not quite as clean and precise, I feel the same about Kelly K.

  12. Kapow! With a solid polish name and stout polish wife to accompany this maltose brew, I’m a fan and will have another soon. But missed the entire SBTB cultural iconic series, thankfully?

  13. This beer stirs up a deep DEEP infatuation I had with Amber brunettes that also may happen to be head cheerleaders. I have a lot of experience here... just ask me.
The beer hops on into your life like a bundle of joy and fun. But just as quickly it hops right off leaving you empty and not at all satisfied.

  14. Some thoughts on this beer and related matters.

First, my youngest son has really taken to Star Wars of late, and over the past few weeks, we have watched all of the Star Wars movies, in order of "episode" number, and then we watched "Solo" and "Rogue One." It was pretty fun, but drinking this beer reminded me of the very awesome mural on the wall at Black Flag that invokes the cantina scene in the original Star Wars. I have really enjoyed going there and getting beer samples over the years, and look forward to going back. Until then, I am really glad to support BF via DOB and my own purchases.

Second, SBTB reboot is apparently on Peacock, and I think Zack is now the governor of California. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hXrK_CNfS4

Finally, there was a time in my misspent youth when me and my friends ordered a not insignificant amount of Killian's Red. Always available in pitchers at the Irish Pub on Walnut Street (a bucket of Rolling Rocks was also an available alternative.)
Even though I have not had a Killian's in 25 years or so (does it still exist) this beer reminds me of that, and I mean that in a good way. I sort of like the soft maltiness of it, and the low ABV makes it a nice and easy beer to enjoy. So, 4/4 Governors of CALI-FOR-NYA" for me, although please note this rating has been adjusted for nostalgia.
