Dec. 15 | Van Dammit | Jailbreak Brewing

Why We Picked It: Jailbreak is an excellent Laurel-brewery where I celebrated some birthday at some point. They all blur at some point.  It usually makes an appearance in recent 24DOBs. Another high ABV brew (Sorry Adam. Your welcome Andrew.)

What Jailbreak Says About It: A traditionally crafted Belgian Dark Strong Ale with notes of plum, raisin, and figs. The deep and complex malt backbone starts sweet and finishes clean and dry. Enjoy the finest in Belgian martial artistry.

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

ABV: 9%

IBU: 27

To Better Know A Brewery: Jailbreak is a freedom expression. Beginning in 2013, and becoming fully operational in 2014, our artfully crafted beer is meant to be an escape from whatever drama is present in your life. We are made up of professionals from various industries, all brought together by the common desire to make something different and do something with our lives that has more purpose.

  1. Oh no. Me no likey. I came into this one pretty open minded as I like jailbreak. But this had an odd raisin taste with a metallic after taste. My least favorite so far.

    1.4/5 signing Californian raisins

  2. "What the..." Was my first thought when I took a sip.
Then I read the description and it made sense.
Can't say I've had plum or raisin or fig flavored beer before.
What I can say is I won't miss it. Anything that can be confused for cough syrup (an excellent way to get a buzz, don't get me wrong) should not be classified as beer.
    2.29/5 Jean-Claude Van Johnson's.

    1. Oh man. Should have read the description. Now it makes sense haha. Still gross but explains the raisins.

    1. bloodsport wins over Kickboxer only because of the blind scene.

    2. Bloodsport. Is there even another Van Damme move worth watching? I just went to wikipedia to look at his list of movies. I am embarrassed how many of these I have seen. I think I saw both Cyborg and Timecop in the theater. Talk about poor decisions. Kind of like the poor decision to finish this beer.

    3. How has no one mentioned Double Team? Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dennis Rodman, and Mickey Rourke in a cinematic tour de force...

    4. Same here. Also with Arnold. Although never was a big Conan fan. Commando is his best film. PERIOD. I can't hear you.
Also went through the Seagal phase, but he's a Douche.

    5. LOVE ROURKE. Too many late 70's early 80's movies. barfly being the best.

Since Blogger is stuck in the 90's not sure this will actually work in a post but sums up this beer - awkward and kind of uncomfortable to drink just as Van Damme dancing is to watch. Think that was from Kick Boxer when he may have been coked out of his mind...

    1. Totally worth the cut & paste.
Bloodsport was on Showtime last month and kept me up till 1:30am. Man, they don't make cheese like they used to.

    3. I've been embarrassed to share this for so long...
Van Damme got me into break dancing as a kid. He was absolutely amazing in the 1984 epic break dance movie Breakin'.
It was so good, they followed it up with the sequel Breakin'2, electric boogaloo

  5. Ugh. I've had this quite a few times before but I think I've always had it in sampler form or at least a small serving. So I probably used the other tasty beers to chase this. This is over the top boozy in my opinion. I mean there is strong and there is Belgian strong. This is a plate of figs and raisins and plums soaked in bourbon. My best description would be a poor man's Mad Elf. 2 out of 5 figgy puddings. And it only gets 2 because it's going to get me good and drunk before dinner. Odds of me passing out on the couch at 8:30 watching Bloodsport? 75%.

  7. I don’t understand all the hate on this one. Raisins, metal, bourbon? I don’t feel like I’m getting much of that just the standard higher ABV Belgian. It’s not outstanding but I don’t think it’s bad either.

  8. Eh, bit too much of an alcohol taste I think. But definitely my favorite beer artwork. A classic

  9. I was not fond of the first few sips. It seemed sweet (too many plums, raisins, and figs?) but it grew on me and was a perfectly acceptable pre-dinner beer. Wouldn't be my first choice, but not sorry I had it.

  10. Very nice beer. Smooth and sweet, with lots of character. The complexity is subtle and it is surprisingly drinkable for a beer this strength. It definitely has a Belgian style, but is almost a style of its own. I think I need another few just to explore all it has to offer.

  11. I'm with Andrew and Ethan on this one. Had this many times and it's always a nice change not pace. It's not something I could have everyday, but I find a decent balance between raisin, bourbon, plum, booze, etc.

This gets 4 out of 5 Kung Fu Panda.

  12. Greg -- I counted myself as a huge Van Damme fan in my early teens. However, Bloodsport notwithstanding, he has largely lost his luster in my esteem. Though I did enjoy his mini-renaissance in that recent Volvo commercial. It seems that blogspot isn't happy with embedded links. Alas. It's on youtube and worth the 1.25 minutes.

As far as his namesake beer here, I enjoyed it. I had never had it before, but I agree with others that it presents a good balance of dark Belgian flavors. I found it paired well with chili.

  13. This one is for the non-posters:

"They think they can get away with not posting after they drink their beers.

But they did not count on one thing.

He's trained to post blogs for his life.

Now, he's fighting for revenge against bad, bourbon-y beers everywhere and people who don't post.

They think it is a game.

He's playing for keeps, and blog posts.

But now, he's facing the ultimate challenge.

    The rules are simple.

    The stakes are high.

    You post, you're good.

You don't post, your beer gets confiscated.

"BeerHEART!" Remember it's never too late.

Anyway, usually like belgians, but this one, not so much. Too fruity or raisiny for my taste. 2/5 lionhearts for me.

  14. I liked the first half, but then it got to be a bit much. I started noticing the metallic aftertaste that others have mentioned.
