December 17 - Schlafly's Tazmanian IPA

About Schlafly's Tazmanian IPAOur Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

  1. First of all, kudos to whoever put this line up together. This has been great fun, really interesting and tonight's offering just proves that all the more. I love this beer! The smell was almost a mix of woodsy and citrus so I knew right off that this would not be standard. The hops are combined with a smooth, mildly sweet, flavor that goes down easy. Almost too easy. Most of it is gone and I am wishing I had a second one already. Nice list.

  2. I am quickly finding out that I really don't like IPA's. Wow the bitterness is overwhelming. The only redeeming thing is the high ABV. Otherwise I its undrinkable. But not to fear fellow beer drinkers I am pushing through to the bitter last drop.

  3. The last two days have made me reconsider my love of hops. Or maybe things from the southern hemisphere. This tasted like a glass of well hopped grapefruit juice. Not a fan at all. Way too much for me and I'm an IPA man. I had this on tap at Meridian Pint a couple of months ago and I remember it being a bit more tolerable. Of course, I think it was my 5th beer of the evening. I still love Tasmania and I still love wombats, but I am not a fan of Tasmanian hops. I'm going to go ahead and chalk hops up as something that the Pacific Northwest does better than anyone else in the world.

  4. Another A+ in my book. Holy smokes - this is a sweet little delicious Tasmanian devil of an IPA. Definitely tastes and smells like pineapple. At first I thought the color was too yellow, but I like how it matches the color of the label, and considering it really does taste like pineapple the light yellow color is quite fitting. From the first mouthful down to the last drop, I found this to be truly delicious. And just as importantly (to me), it smelled fantastic as well. This one is going on my list of beers to seek out again, although it will probably be hard to find since it's a limited release.

    1. The 1st 2 years it was a very limited and VERY popular beer...it sold out so quickly that this year they decide to greatly increase the production. Shirley, this should be around for a while this year. But dont delay get out there and grab a case as soon as you can.

  5. I actually had this one a few days before 24 days of beer at a random dinner at brion's grille. Unbeknownst to me it was on the beer kist and I wanted to try it because its from st. Louis and I enjoyed the last offering we had from Schlafly's during a previous 24 days of beer. I think the second go around withTasmanian IPA was much better. Even though it was an IPA I kinda enjoyed this one, maybe it was the austrailian hops or the citrius and pineapple. I probably would give this one a shot if I was in an experimental kick with beer. 6. Damn fine IPA...probably one of the best IPA's out there. So unique...so drinkable...so yummy.
Great balance and the Galaxy aroma and flavor is unmistakable. So glad they decided to celebrate the strain in this way. I just got another case and will enjoy every one of them.
Tony...I'll have a sixer in hand when I show up on Saturday.

I'll be tapping a keg of this later this week at my bar...soooo excited!

    1. Wow this is awesome! A sixer might not be enough, and I may have to come by the bar to check this out on tap. If it's better on tap, I may have to buy a keg of it :)

  7. Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oye Oye Oye! That is how I felt about the hoppy IPA part and it seemed pretty balanced, but I could never completely get past the pineapple. Reminded me of the Maui Mana Wheat we had for the summer tasting a couple years ago. I think this one was better than that one, but I just the pineapple beer will work for me.

On a related note: I highly recommend going to Schlafy's if in you are in St. Louis. I went to the Bottleworks restaurant and it was outstanding. both brew selection and menu.

  8. Tony is mad at me because I am not liking a lot of these beers. Doesn't that just mean it's more for him...? Sorry, not feeling this one. Although, the smell is very fruity which is appealing to me. I just don't care for the flavor.

    WHERE IS MARK BOLTER???

  9. Schlafly's consistently puts out excellent product and this here is no exception. Wow this was great Absolutely positively great! And im not an IPA fan at all. Love the citrus/sweet/pineapple flavor to balance out the bitterness. I'm going to keep an eye out for more southern hemisphere hops after these last beers. A!

  10. Out of all the beers on the list this year, this is the one I was looking forward to the most. It did not disappoint! Man is this good beer. Love the smell, reminds me of a sweet wine. And then the taste. Very smooth, a little citrus, and it just seems crisp. I absolutely love it. I don't know what else I would want in a beer. Good color, great smell, great taste and a ABV around 7% is perfect. Grade 10 out of 10, A+

  11. One of my favorite beers of all time. I had it last year at Pi and immediately put it on my list at Chef Geoff's. I love the floral notes from the Galaxy hops. Basically the perfect beer. A+

  12. Like the citrus flavor...but still a hoppy kick! Reminds me a lot of the Maine Brewing Company "Peeper Ale" -- yum.

  13. Loved this. Some citrus, some hops. A really top-notch IPA. Any wombat would approve.

  14. An amazing homage to Galaxy hops! I absolutely loved this beer and will try my hardest to recreate it on my home system. The foam sat on top of my glass like beautiful, expensive, off-white pillows. The aroma was unlike anything I've ever smelled and the taste was equally exciting. Pineapple and citrus come through beautifully and I couldn't stop sipping this beer. I wish I had another and another.

  15. I really like this a lot - different, interesting, awesome citrus combinations. Fantastic hop presence without going over the top or being crazy bitter. I would look for this and buy it for when I'm in the mood for Hoppy. I believe I have a thing for Galaxy hops. I think that might be the New Zealand hop variety in Union's Duckpin (among other hops in that beauty) - does anyone know for sure? Someone else mentioned the label - how awesome is that - it's perfect for this beer! I can look at the label and remember exactly what this gem tasted like. I want more. Awesome choice, beer guys.

  16. Wow, this is definitely more of a hoppy APA than an IPA
