December 8 - Rogue Dead Guy Ale

About Rogue Dead Guy AleIn the style of a German Maibock, using our proprietary Pacman ale yeast. Deep honey in color with a malty aroma and a rich hearty flavor.

In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved so popular with consumers and especially Grateful Dead fans, that we made it the label for our Maierbock ale. Even though the association with the Grateful Dead band is pure coincidence, we have gratefully dedicated Dead Guy Ale to the Rogue in each of us.

  1. I'm back after a 4 day interruption due to travel that took me to Huntsville, Vegas, Baltimore, Philly and back to lovely Va ! And in 4 hours, I will attempt to leave again, en route to Louisville. Anyhow, the beer...meh...didn't catch my attention, even with the blanket of snow outside. Looking forward to catching up on the days I missed and staying on pace for the rest of the month. Santa Stumble next Saturday for anyone in/around Georgetown...pretty straight forward, dress up like Santa or your favorite holiday character...women in sexy clause outfits. At least that's what a friend of a friend of a friend told me #idneverparticipateinsuchevents

  2. Normally I stay away from Rogue beers because the price isnt justified and this is no exception. I do like the beer but it wasn't stellar and I wouldn't get again. B

  3. I remember my first Rogue Dead Guy at the Mesquito Grill in Doylestown, PA. (Business trips can be a wonderful opportunity for finding brews you can't find at home.) I had just been introduced to the concept of craft brews and I remember enjoying it immensely. Then again, my wife is fond of saying "Let's face it. You just like beer." Despite having been introduced to and enjoying many other craft brews since that time, I have to say that this is still a good, solid ale. Nothing off the charts. Predictable, but in a good way. I would keep this as a staple in my fridge alongside other staples such as Dogfish 60 Minute IPA.

  4. Another decent beer although I wouldn't put it in my top 3 give the past 4 days of top notch Ale's. But it is in my top 5 for taste alone. However the taste doesn't justify the price. However if one of my buddy's were buying, then I would choose this one!

  5. Very approporiate to select a Northwest beer for me to drink during the Hawks game. Probably should have started drinking this about 5 minutes into the Redskins game and then had about 12 more beers.

Long-time fan of Rogue but much of that is just because the bottles have cool drawings. And the Reef used to have that rotating Rogue on tap back when good beer was hard to find, the fish were still swimming, and the bouncers didn't stab patrons.

I'm pretty sure this was the first Rogue I had, but it had been a while. And I found this to be much less exciting than I remembered. Just kind of blah. Maybe it was the lack of birds of paradise, nutmeg, and douglas fir that we've experienced the last few days. So I give this a B-. Nothing wrong with it, but I expected more.

  6. Eh, drank this then started catching up with the gingerbread beer from a few days ago. All I can say is this one is forgettable, so maybe its a good persistence beer

  7. I had high hopes for this beer because I've heard good things about Rogue. However this beer was just very average. I did like it, but not in comparison to some of the other beers we have tasted recently. I guess that's a good thing for the beer selection this year, but a bad thing for Rogue. With two other Rogue beers on tap for later in our tasting, I hope they are better. If I was grading on taste I would give this beer a B-, but factoring in cost it would get a 6.5 out of 10, C+ I think there are better beers out there in the similar style for less.

  8. Pretty average. I think I liked it better than I normally would because I'm drinking it as we're decorating the tree and listening to Christmas music. Tony wanted to play Lil Wayne but I overruled that.

  9. I'm in town just long enough for my first tasting of the year. Leaving tomorrow at 4AM with an EnivorCab ride to IAD...hopefully. Anyone up for helping de-ice my sidewalk first? Bolts, maybe I'll see you at the airport. I'll be participating only on Saturdays and Sundays and relying heavily on my wife to drink and post regularly this holiday season. In the meantime, I'm drinking my Rogue and enjoying it. Rogue is a pretty stellar brewery with a pretty amazing f-you attitude. I'm pretty sure that they don't care what we think about their beers whatsoever. Having said that, I've had six today and love them.

  10. I missed yesterday so drinking the Rogue and the lights out pretty much concurrently. I'm starting to wonder if I just lost my love for beer after 3 years living in Louisville Ky and drinking almost exclusively bourbon. I say this because I did not care much for either beer and I've been Debby downer on many since we started. I love trying them, but I think my beer palette is so narrow that I find things that are not wheat beers hard to get through. I'm going to work on these some more tonight and maybe, like an ugly date, they will look better the more I drink.

    1. Ps, of the two of these though, the rogue was by far the better date

  11. This one was just "meh" for me. (I believe that's the accepted terminology around here.) A little sour, a tad bitter, but not much else going on taste-wise.

  12. This was pretty light and enjoyable. I didn't think it was anything impressive or to rush out and buy up but I could drink a few of these. A solid session beer. B-

  13. I was prepared to not like this, I guess because of some of the other Rogue beers that I've had (dumb, I know). Anyway, I was happily surprised and enjoyed it quite a bit. I like the sweet/light maltiness, with a subtle clean bitterness to finish it off. It reminds me a bit of New Belgiums's Hoppy Bock, one of my all time favorite beers.

  14. I have had Dead Guy Ale quite a few times in the past, but it had been a few years. They sell it at Giant but the price doesn't warrant it. This was the first beer in the 24 that I didn't have right out of the gate. Had it after the Blue Mountain Holiday Ale. Maybe the yeast clashed between the two. I'll give it a grade of B-.

  15. I've had this beer a few times before, and my thoughts drinking it were along the lines of "I've had this before...though, I'm not sure what makes this unique". I couldn't figure it out before I finished it.

  16. Dead Guy Ale makes regular appearances in my fridge. I tend to drink so many IPAs and other big flavors, its a refreshing change of pace with a nice balance while still being interesting. Plus, it's still one of my favorite beer bottle labels.

    1. I should note it taste extra good tonight, but that's probably just because I'm watching my fantasy team rollover McNary's.

  17. Solid ale...nothing special tho. Palate pretty spoiled by all the big seasonal brews I have been drinking lately.
Shameless plug...If you find yourself in NW DC swing by Chef Geoff's to get a seasonal sampler...we got a killer draft lineup right now.
I'd drink this beer anytime someone else was paying ;)

  18. Not bad, not really great either. I could drink this easily, but don't think I'd go out and buy it.

  19. Dead maybe!.....It's just ok! Will not buy that one again for sure. I think Rogue have better beers than that one.

  20. Circling back on this one. This was the first Rogue I remember having, and I enjoyed it. I'd probably enjoy it more if the weather was a bit warmer, but it is a decent beer. Not the best Rogue has to offer, though.
