December 17 - Allagash Dubbel
Why we picked it: The Allagash beers we've tried in past 24 DoB have been great. This is one we have not tried yet.
About Allagash's Dubbel: Allagash Dubbel boasts a deep red color and a complex malty taste. The finish is dry with subtle hints of chocolate and nuts. The yeast asserts itself by lending a classic Belgian fruitiness.

Has anyone gone out on a date and a week later your buddies ask you how it went? And all you can say is I don't remember because the date wasn't bad, but was great either. She looked good but not great and so on. You can't remember anything memorable but the date wasn't bad at all. The real question that your friends want to know is if you would go out with her again. And of course you say, if she paid for dinner and my first 2 choices couldn't go out then I would definitely go. This describes this beer.
ReplyDeleteI think my long Allagash back story has been well documented and need not be repeated here. But, it can be linked to...

Anyway, I'm pretty sure I was one of the first people in DC to ever have an Allagash since they had to be illegally smuggled in back in the nineties. So to put it mildly, I had high hopes for this beer. I like most Allagash beers I've had and I really like the triple (or tripel as they say in Belgium and Maine). Figured the Dubbel must be at least 2/3 as good. Not at all. Definitely tastes like a Belgian beer but it accentuates all of the things about some Belgian beers that I'm not a fan of. Too fruity and too sour. And yes, those are technical terms. I'm going to stick with the other Allagash offerings.
I have high expectations for this beer. I like all of the Allagash beers I've tried. I hope this one is good too. I took a sniff and what is that chocolate doing in the smell. First sip...taste pretty decent. Second sip...which was actually three gulps, I like it! It's not awesome, but it's hitting the spot! The finish is kind of dry. I'm a fan. Grade 8 of 10, solid B.
ReplyDeleteMeh. Not bad, not great. If it's being served at a party, I'm glad to drink it. But I'm not buyin' it.
ReplyDeleteI had about half of it and decided I didn't like it. It tastes bitter and unfortunately I cannot get any of the fruit as described. Check minus.
ReplyDeleteAverage. I don't taste the fruit but a nutty maltiness. Prefer done other Allagash beers over this, 1 is enough for me.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't the first time this year that I have tried something nut flavored--but that's a longer story. When it comes to this Allagash offering what overwhelmed me was the nuts. There was a hint of chocolate but no real fruitiness despite the claim of the beer itself. As I was drinking this, I was thinking, "I bet the crazy band of squirrels that terrorize my neighborhood would really enjoy this." Then I started picturing drunk squirrels--which is really funny if you think about it--and I know you just did. Then I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that water skiing squirrel ever had a beer." Then I started picturing a drunk squirrel on water skis and that was even funnier.
ReplyDeleteBut then I thought, "could a squirrel actually pick up a beer bottle?" I mean, they have those cute little hands and those vicious nails. I bet they could. Then I started thinking about a bunch of squirrels hanging out a the 7-11 passing around a 40. Man that would be killer.
Then my wife walked by and said, "what's with the you?" And I just said, "squirrels" and started laughing. That's when I reached for another sip and it was gone--I had drunk the whole thing thinking about squirrels. Oh well--it was tasty enough to drink when I wasn't thinking about it. Would I have another? That depends--if it were just me, probably. If I were hanging with squirrels, definitely.
I must have had a different beer than everyone else because I thought this was deelisshhh. Didn't get much of the fruit or nutty taste but didn't care either because it was good. Did get a vague chocolate taste tho, but no where near as much as a typical stout. This is on par with what I expect from Allagash. B+
ReplyDeleteSo I poured it into a glass and since it had a decent amount of head, I some left in the bottle. Call me a nutjob, but I liked it better out the bottle.
Wasn't really in the beer mood tonight given the last day and a half, but this was solid. Good color, flavor - I think this was a solid beer. Kinda sweet, not bad aftertaste - wouldn't turn another one down. Overall Allagash offerings have been pretty legit. Too bad it's in Maine. VA needs to step it up
ReplyDeletePretty good beer. Before I knew it, half my beer was gone and I was still having a hard time placing what it was that I liked about it so much. I normally hate fruity beers, but this one seems to have perfected the blend. Wish I had a few more. A-
ReplyDeleteMeh...this was an eminently drinkable beer but sure didn't have any wow factor. I really enjoy Allagash beers but this one was really not all that exciting. I sure do like to drink beer and absolutely drank this one down quick. Not bad but not memorable...
ReplyDeleteI would pass if I ever saw this beer as an option
I love me some Allagash and had I hopes for this, but turned out to be a very unengaging beer. All the flavors were so subtle that nothing really stood out and it ended up being pretty forgettable. Grade: 5/10
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've had a bad Allagash product. I hadn't had this one before and didn't really know what to expect, but was very surprised at how much I liked it. It has a lot going on without anything being excessive or out of place. I guess it's the malty amber backbone and the Belgian traits interacting that I like - not sure, but I know it like it. I want more.
ReplyDeleteNot great. Lovely color, but a strong mettalic taste.
ReplyDeleteThis beer was just okay. I generally enjoy dubbels and the Allagash line. However, this one just didn't have a memorable quality to it. I wouldn't necessarily turn down one if offered, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get one either.
ReplyDeleteDubbels are probably my favorite type of beer and this is probably my favorite American made dubbel. I have had it before on draft and think it's comparable out of the bottle. Love everything about it, color, flavor, body, aroma. Solid 'A' for me.
ReplyDeleteSolid Belgian. I wasn't in the mood for a Belgian, but it won me over. Nice malt and classic Belgian yeast and finish. B.
