Day 24 | August 2 | Avery Brewing Hazyish IPA

Why We Picked It: It has to end some time (or so I have been led to believe). Avery is a solid brewery (of not local) and this seems like a chance to try a new hazy (and they can all be so different). Plus, 7 percent so we can finish with a bang.

What Avery Says About It:  A juicy and hazy India Pale Ale with low bitterness, an expressive aroma of four different hop varieties, and a creamy mouthfeel. We wouldn't be Avery Brewing if we didn't put our own stamp on the juicy and hazy IPA style. We took all that is great in a hazy IPA; low bitterness paired with the powerful and juicy aroma of hops, and the silky sensation of the liquid, but brewed for excellent shelf stability and consistency from batch to batch.

ABV: 7%

IBU: 30

  1. First, thanks to the organizers. This was a fun way to break up the summer of covid. Some great beers and lots of beers I would have never tried (and 2 or 3 I wish I never did). As a rookie hopefully I had a good first showing.

Now for this beer, this is pretty much the exact type of beer I don’t like. They say low bitterness, but I just got a bad bitter followed by an almost moldy bitter (is that a thing?) followed by that 7% kick. This is a 2.5 out of 5 24 beers of summer.

    QED.

    1. In! Although I am worried this will be my 12 year old's gateway beer.

  4. What perfect timing. Last beer on the last day of living in this house for almost 18yrs. It's the longest I've lived anywhere. Extra bonus, didn't have to pack the 24dob beers. Yay.
    To the beer.
I like Avery brewing. Most everything I've hade of theirs has been decent.
This too, is a good representation of a hazy-ish IPA. Can't see the color (all my glasses are packed away).
While I'm not a huge fan of hazies and I try to avoid beers over 6ish ABV, I am ok with this one. Wouldn't buy it for the house, but if it was an option. At a bar (remember those places?) I'd pick it.
Thank you all for another wonder 24 excuses to his my alcoholism, event.
Enjoy the rest of your summer everyone.

  5. And another 24DOB comes to an end (tear drop).

This was a good one to finish on. A touch bitterness but citrus and smooth at the same time. It's definitely a sneaky 7 percent.

Note: "the silky sensation of the liquid" may be my favorite term I've ever read in a beer description.

    1. Obviously you don't ready romantic novels like Harlequin.

  6. Loved this beer. Good bit of haze and just a nice little bit of sweetness. Always been a big Avery fan. Another glorious 24 days of beer. I think this went much better than our last summer edition. I honestly don't see why we don't do the 365 days of beer (366 this year) and just keep this going. So start again tomorrow? I'll go ahead and post my rankings momentarily but this one gets a 4 out of 5 Bill McCartney Promise Keepers until I find out my daughter is pregnant by the minority QB. Go Buffs! RIP Sal. And fuck you McCartney (Bill, not Paul).

  8. This was my favorite. 4/4/. I really liked the hoppy, fruit forward flavor. I don’t ever get beer from Avery, but I will be on the lookout.

Things I have learned during 24 DOB (COVID-19 Edition). Some IPA’s have no IBU’s . . . “shite” is a great word that I should use more frequently . . . Hayes Creek is probably not a real place, after all, but a state of mind . . . Pinot Noir is the beer drinkers’ wine . . . Theodore was moving to a new house in the middle of all of this (?!?!?!) while still posting reviews LIKE A BOSS . . . “supernacular”. . . Europeans do not just drive to breweries . . . Clipper City > Heavy Seas . . . drinking BMore Active beer is not actually exercise . . . everybody remembers (and still hates) Zima . . . the group, in large part, does not seem to like salty beer . . . Joe Elliot sang “Animal” . . . Duckpin = “Suckpin” . . . it IS true – nobody reads positive reviews . . . a dent in a beer can – while a legitimate cause for concern – does NOT actually affect the taste . . . rainy days at the beach will negatively impact beer assessments.

Many thanks to Scott and the other 24 DOB organizers. This was a really fun thing to do during a summer where “fun” is in shorter supply. I am looking forward to the next 24 DOB. Thanks for including me! [But, I still need to post reviews for Sierra Nevada and Big Punisher (how did I miss that one?)]

    1. Sierra Nevada posted. I somehow managed to squander my Big Punisher without reviewing, remembering or posting. I will try to find another post haste and review if the blog remains open a little while longer.

  9. This was a good hazy IPA. That said, I cant wait until this fad is over. They are just filled with too many off flavors and they look awful. There are some quality hop characteristics in there but they are overshadowed by whatever tha have craze is all about. This beer is good but can get off my lawn.

  10. I know i am very late on this, but finally caught up and finished the final 2 last night. Just wanted to say thanks to all the organizers for allowing me to participate in 24 days of beer. What a great way to spend the summer. Favorite beer overall was day 1, the Home Grown IPA. I have already purchased more and will do so again.

As for this beer, It was OK. Nothing really stood out about it, but I'd drink it again as I am on board the Hazy IPA train.

Thanks again. Have a great summer!

  11. found a DOB24 beer bottle in my fridge from December 2019.

Well, OK: not just 1 beer.
    6 actually.

    [Couldnt face them last xmas.]

Cracked open the Flying Dogshit 'Me Llamo Mole'.
Had 3 sips and that was ... well, ... way too much. The rest went down the shitter bowl.

    Still have 5 bottles left!
So my tests - and my thoughtful, honest feedback about how I really feel about them - will follow.

But again this one is a bad example that has reinforced my long standing opinion about flying dogshit.
