December 24 - Southern Tier Krampus

We have made it to the end of our 24 Days of Beer!  Thank you all for participating!  I hope all of you enjoyed the journey and will join us again next year and maybe even in the summer!  Tonight's beer has an extra 10 for everyone to enjoy.  Merry Christmas!

About Southern Tier Krampus Brewed with the spirit of Krampus, the fanged, goat-horned bully that is, as European tradition suggests, the evil sidekick of St. Nicholas and enforcer of the list.  While St. Nick delivers presents to the good boys and girls, Krampus is there to punish the naughty children.  This Christmas season, enjoy a Krampus Imperial Helles Lager and decide whether you are naughty or nice.  Finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days, it is the medley of rich, dark malts and aromatic hops that make this a diabolical brew, threatening to warm even the most frigid of hearts.

December 22 - Southern Tier 2Xmas

About Southern Tier 2XmasSwedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country.  Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits.  We were inspired by a Glogg party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.  2xMas Ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root.  Its a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to roast to the season, but unlike Glogg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Food Pairings:  Particularly tasty when paired with sausages, korv, fish, pickled herring, rich cheeses, holiday cookies and cake.

December 19 - Natty Greene's Red Nose Winter Ale

About Natty Greene's Red Nose Winter AleFor Red Nose, we start with a classic American red ale, a beer that's slightly sweeter than an amber, made with plenty of caramel malts and just enough hops for balance. Then, we bring in a spice profile that supports the aroma of the beer.

Fresh ginger gives Red Nose a nice bite. A bit of orange peel adds tartness, and cinnamon brings in a clean and spicy top note. Together, they're a perfect complement to the sweet, malty foundation of the red ale.

This is a beer that’s crafted to complement your holiday meals and celebrations. Like the season, it's festive, warm-hearted, companionable – and meant to be shared with your favorite folks.

December 17 - Schlafly's Tazmanian IPA

About Schlafly's Tazmanian IPAOur Tasmanian IPA is brewed with 100% Australian hops. The Tasmanian hop, Galaxy, is a strong, aromatic variety that is different from traditional strains of the Pacific Northwest. Our brewers developed a recipe that showcases the hop’s unique flavors of citrus and pineapple.

India Pale Ales (IPAs) were first brewed in England during the late 1700s for export overseas to British soldiers in India. To keep their beer from spoiling during the long voyage, English brewers fortified their traditional pale ale recipes with natural preservatives: more malted barley, for a higher alcohol content, and more hops. In recent decades, with growing appreciation for highly hopped beers, American craft brewers have revived the style, embraced it, and incorporated new hop varieties. Our Special Release IPAs further those traditions and showcase the distinctions of hops from different hemispheres.

December 15 - Weyerbacher Winter Ale

About Weyerbacher Winter AleAt Weyerbacher we’ve created a Winter Ale that is a must for any malty beer lover. Winner of a Silver Medal in the 1998 World Beer Championships, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is brewed with deep-roasted chocolate malt. The taste predominates with a warm, roasty flavor, balanced out with a slightly dry finish. It’s smooth but not cloying, with a warming belt of alcohol (5.6% ABV).

Although winter ales predate history, they are believed to have their origin in the pagan celebrations of winter solstice. Later, when monasteries produced the local brew, winter ales were made each year to commemorate the birth of Christ. Back then, winter ales were brewed full-bodied as a source of nutrition for the upcoming winter months. Today, winter ales are typified by their seasonality, their rich, malty flavors and by their deep, dark coloration.

Generally available November through February, Weyerbacher Winter Ale is the perfect libation for a winter meal, with good friends, or beside a warm fire fending off a cold winter night.

December 13 - SixPoint Global Winter Warmer

About SixPoint Global Winter WarmerWe present the Global Warmer, an authentic Mad Scientists creation based upon an original recipe.  The objective is simple—create awesome liquid and draw attention to the rapidly changing beer climate. Naturally, the beer doesn’t conform to existing style guidelines, because the Mad Scientists brew to their own tastes. This undefinable formulation demonstrates the potency of changing recipes, but does so with nuanced flavor from malt, hops and yeast. Toasted malt expresses rich depth to remind you this is a winter brew. But the citrus hop character and 70 IBUs of incandescent herbal spiciness shine throughout—a new sort of winter warmer for a changing globe.

The Global Warmer is our third brew to go in tall, slim cans, and is 7% ABV with 70 searing IBUs. After a nose characterized by big hop character, an ample, coating bitterness rushes the palate. The malt is a pleasant contrast; it’s soft and complex, with notes of biscuit and toasted caramel.  And the malt presence is deep enough that you’ll detect dark fruit and even mild hints of chocolate as your brew warms.

December 10 - Oskar Blues Old Chub Scotch Ale

About Oskar Blues Old Chub Scotch AleIt's like Sputnik!  This jaw-dropping Scottish strong ale is brewed with bodacious amounts of malted barley and specialty grains, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malt. Old Chub features semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, and a wee-bit of smoke. A head-turning treat for malt heads and folks who think they don’t dig dark beer.  Brewed in North Carolina.

Old Chub is a Scottish style ale brewed with copious amounts of crystal and chocolate malts, and a dash of beechwood-smoked malts. While Dale's Pale Ale ("the best-tasting canned beer I've ever had," according to many brewers and beer experts) is a showcase of both hops and pale malts, Old Chub is a celebration of malts. The cola-colored beer features a dense, tawny head, a creamy mouthful and flavors of caramel, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. Complex and rich, it finishes with a whisper of smokiness that calls to mind a fine single malt scotch. Old Chub weighs in at 8 % alcohol by volume

December 9 - Devils Backbone Kilt Flasher Wee Heavy Scotch Ale

About Devils Backbone Kilt Flasher Wee Heavy Scotch AleThis Scottish-style wee heavy ale is deep ruby in color, full in body with a sweet, malty finish. A great beer for late Fall or early Winter. If it ain’t Scottish it’s...!

It uses dark crystal malt, amber malt, pale malt, and roasted barley to create the backbone of this malt forward beer.  A long boil caramelizes the malt sugars and adds to the richness.

Deep ruby in color. Toffee and caramel on the nose. Flavors of caramel, toffee, nuts, molasses and a lightly hopped finish, with notes of faint peat-like smoke. Smooth.

December 8 - Rogue Dead Guy Ale

About Rogue Dead Guy AleIn the style of a German Maibock, using our proprietary Pacman ale yeast. Deep honey in color with a malty aroma and a rich hearty flavor.

In the early 1990s Dead Guy Ale was created as a private tap sticker to celebrate the Mayan Day of the Dead (November 1st, All Souls Day) for Casa U Betcha in Portland, Oregon. The Dead Guy design proved so popular with consumers and especially Grateful Dead fans, that we made it the label for our Maierbock ale. Even though the association with the Grateful Dead band is pure coincidence, we have gratefully dedicated Dead Guy Ale to the Rogue in each of us.

December 5 - Grimbergen Double Ale

About Grimbergen Double Ale: Born from double fermentation, the Grimbergen Amber is a generous beer with a dark robe, thanks to the mixing of different malts.  It is rich, deep and ample in the mouth.  This amber beer boasts flavors that are both sweet and bitter; with subtle notes of caramel.

The powerful alcohol aroma plays alongside doughy and ripe plum scents. The flavor initially washes the palate with a mild mix of plum and red grapes and floral, spicy hops that just tickle the tongue. While lovely flavors, they lack complexity. December 3 - Ommegang Rare Vos Amber Ale

About Ommegang Rare Vos Amber AleRare Vos Amber Ale is styled after the smooth, drinkable beers popular in Belgian cafés. It pours a light copper hue, contrasting beautifully with a big, creamy white head. The nose offers orange blossoms and slight spice.  On the palate, the caramel maltiness shines strongly but with little sweetness. The profile leans toward dry fruity (yeast-affiliated), slightly fruity/hoppy with a beguiling spiciness. This complex, medium-bodied beer has a smooth mid-palate and moderate dry finish.  Well-balanced in all elements, it's a mild, mellow brew.  Brewed in Cooperstown, NY.

Food Pairing:  Rare Vos has earned its spot as one of the most food friendly of all of Brewery Ommegang's ales. Its aromatics of citrus and caramel lead the culinary minded to pair it with cheese of all styles or even a rich fig bread pudding.  The ale's flavor profile has a pleasant booziness to it and mild acidity and hops. This combination lends itself to be paired with a rich black truffle and lobster risotto or pork belly and mustard greens. Add it to chili, jambalaya or gumbo to give your dish a pleasant bitterness and roastiness.

Pour:  Pour slowly so as to not disturb the yeast, but with enough vigor to create a luxurious head and release the rich bouquet.

Thank you all for joining in our 3rd annual 24 Days of Beer Christmas edition!  We have set up this Blog so that we can have a central location to banter about our beer tasting journey.  At this blog you will be able to see what beer to drink each day, post comments, read others' comments and inevitably there will be witty comments and some trash talking.

I know not everyone on this list knows everyone else, but everyone here is friends of friends and you can be assured that we all have at least one thing in common.  Everyone assembled here loves beer.  The end goal is for everyone to get to try 24 different beers that they otherwise would have never tried and have some fun doing it.
