December 13 - SixPoint Global Winter Warmer

About SixPoint Global Winter WarmerWe present the Global Warmer, an authentic Mad Scientists creation based upon an original recipe.  The objective is simple—create awesome liquid and draw attention to the rapidly changing beer climate. Naturally, the beer doesn’t conform to existing style guidelines, because the Mad Scientists brew to their own tastes. This undefinable formulation demonstrates the potency of changing recipes, but does so with nuanced flavor from malt, hops and yeast. Toasted malt expresses rich depth to remind you this is a winter brew. But the citrus hop character and 70 IBUs of incandescent herbal spiciness shine throughout—a new sort of winter warmer for a changing globe.

The Global Warmer is our third brew to go in tall, slim cans, and is 7% ABV with 70 searing IBUs. After a nose characterized by big hop character, an ample, coating bitterness rushes the palate. The malt is a pleasant contrast; it’s soft and complex, with notes of biscuit and toasted caramel.  And the malt presence is deep enough that you’ll detect dark fruit and even mild hints of chocolate as your brew warms.

  1. yes its early but its happy hour in Warrenton on a Friday earlier than other areas. Bitter aftertaste but interesting flavor that I can't describe. Which made me drink some more, and more, and more with each taste luring me for another until I finished it. I can tell you on an empty stomach it packs a wallop and left me muttering "thank you sir, may I have another!"

  2. Sorry SixPoint. What you have here is an IPA. There is nothing winter warmish about it. As an IPA it isn't half bad. Maybe a B-. As a Winter Warmer I guess it gets an F.

  3. Not what I was expecting from the description. I agree with others that this is essentially an IPA, but since I love IPA's I enjoyed it quite a lot. Smelled nicely aromatic and tasted fairly delicious. I probably would have been raving about this beer, but I had a Fordham IPA earlier today which was awesome and I didn't think this one quite measured up to that. Still - definitely a winner and I would drink it again with no hesitation.

I'm just confused by the description going on about malt and biscuit and toasted caramel and chocolate - is it just me or was there literally not even a tiny hint of any of that?? I think they put the wrong beer in the can. But whatever it was, I liked it anyway.

  4. Loved the smell of this so much that I smelled it three times before I took a sip. What I expected I was going to taste was completely different than what I tasted. Wow this was bitter. Once you get past the bitterness though it's not too bad. I like IPAs so I guess that's why I like this winter warmer. "a new sort of winter warmer for a changing globe"...indeed it is. This is nothing like any of the other winter beers. Why do I feel like this beer belongs on the 24 Days of Beer Summer edition? I like it though. Grade 7.5 out of 10, C+

  5. This sucks! I'm really disappointed because I thought I'd like this one. It's way too bitter.

  6. Was I the only one that was expecting this to taste like a red bull? I really like this I one but it was hard to place, guess I have the Mad Scientist to thank for that. Might have to add this to the rotation. A

  7. I drank this from the tall boy Red Bull can since it seemed the proper thing to do. Totally agree with everyone else. All I taste is hops. Glorious, glorious hops. What some find bitter, I find awesome. I got zero hint of malt, caramel, chocolate, mocha, nutmeg, pine, juniper, or birds of paradise. All I got was citrus hops which is what I look for in a beer. Sure it's not the best choice when it's 30 degrees outside and I'm trying to scrape ice off my car, but I'm not really a seasonal drinker (well, I guess I am a four season drinker) so I find this to be great. Best beer so far.

Just read this comment to Ro. She grimaced. Found this to be way too hoppy.

  8. Holy shit that was great! For the record I'm not a fan of pale ales but this hit the spot perfectly. I tasted a citrus flavor sorta like grapefruit which I thought went well with the hops. Nothing "winter" about this beer but who cares. I'm gonna keep an eye out for this brewery and this beer again. A!

  9. This is an IPA. I dislike IPA. I was going to say I hate IPA, but I thought hate was too strong a word to use on the same day I put up my Christmas tree. So in the spirit of the holiday season, I'll avoid saying I hated this beer.

  10. Best beer yet!! An IPA with seasonal spices... I could drink many of these... and tried too, unfortunately the wife couldn't find then at the grocery store so I ended up with ranger ipas... good beer friday = shitty sat morning! I hate getting old

  11. I love the idea behind this brew. Take a winter ale and twist it up with a crapload of hops...
They could have easily gone heavier on the malt and spices and perhaps chosen different hops...more cascade perhaps. I like it...I just think they shoulda gone bigger for a winter warmer.
I'll totally buy this the next time I see it

  12. A day behind but wow. Loved the one. I got much more of the spice (not chocolate or biscuit or anything like that) than others. I got in the habit of holding it for a second or two, before getting that big hoppy finish. This may be my favorite so far.

  13. Not a big fan of IPAs. Too hoppy. This one was no exception. Not gone have another ever again.

  14. Still catching up from being out of town. I try not to read the other postings before I try the beer, so I was completely surprised by how hoppy this was. I had to look twice at the can to make sure that I wasn't missing something. It does not taste anything like what I would categorize as a winter warmer. I completely missed out on any of the spices. This was a good IPA. I love IPA's so I enjoyed this, but it was not what I would consider a seasonal beer.

  15. Perfect balance of Malt and hops. Tom, I think it's time to add this to the list at CG. Overall score: 90

  16. Playing a little catch-up. Loved this. Like others have said, you can call it what you want but this an IPA. Do like the extra bit of citrus. It is almost over the top with the hoppy bitterness but I could drink a lot of these.

  17. I enjoyed this one - a good bold winter beer.

  18. Meh, for all the pretty labels and colorful words on the can I didn't think this was anything special.
