Very sweet, honey flavor to start. A very deceptive 8.x% I'm very thankful for that since I'm 1 v 3 with the kids tonight. Only complaint is a flat finish (despite the crisp description). Nice, indeed.
ReplyDeleteHoney. Good call. I am terrible at identifying these things. For 1 on 3 I would recommend three more of these.
DeleteOpened up a Celebration Ale and turned on PBS Kids. All is well.
DeleteWell done sir
DeleteGot to admit, I was not very excited about this. Belgian Golden Ale is not really what I'm ever looking for in a beer. Especially the golden part. Also I was sort of hoping for naughty today. Poured it in the glass and not much head and very yellow. Another bad sign. Took a big whiff and got slammed by the pils. Another bad sign. Took my first sip. Opinion changed! I guess it's the hops and the 8.3% punch from the alcohol but this is quite outstanding. Definitely very sweet. Reminds me of pears. In a good way. Really enjoying this. Or should I say really enjoyed it. Because it's gone. In one word. Nice.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you conjuring the pils in your impression. I got that lagery feel as well. Something a little off with this one.
DeleteI am a huge flying dog fan. There are few beers that I don't like from them. Some brew house rarities like supertramp were very questionable. I am not a huge fan of goldens. This may make me change my mind though. It's tasty and fulfilling with a little fruit kick. Another flying dog winner for me. Can't wait for Naughty since I really like Belgian strongs.
ReplyDeleteWonder if anyone else noticed the habanero addition to the naughty. I'm interested to see how this one plays out.
DeleteI am not a huge a fan of Flying Dog well b/c it is usually got a Dog Shit aftertaste. And this did not disappoint. This has a Dog Shit after taste. Don't know if its me projecting or what but didn't like it. Not a fan of Belgium white's so maybe that has something to do with it too?
ReplyDeleteYes, I can taste the honey.
Of course I accidentally opened the wrong beer, big Freudian slip there. I'll reserve my comments on it but it at least explains my questioning of people's taste buds when reading their post and then taking my first sip.
ReplyDeleteI think Flying Dog is a really cool brewery and I like a lot of their beers, but not all of them, so I was a little concerned that this might be a holiday novelty thing. Like most of their labels, I think the art is original and extremely cool. I generally like Belgians and I got that signature aroma right away. I definitely get a sweetness up front that fades into a crisp and slightly alcoholic finish. I think this is very well done and I'd love to have another. Can't wait to try the Naughty.
ReplyDeleteVery niiiice. almost too nice to be 8.3%. I'm grown biatch.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bill. I was not excited to try a Belgian Golden Ale--whatever that is. The initial pour resulted in, wait for it.....a golden ale. Man, were they spot on! It was topped with a good, foamy head and was full of heavy carbonation. Even with that carbonation, I wasn't burping up a storm so that was good. Not really sure what to write about this beer as it was neither awesome nor overly disappointing. It was kind of like getting socks for Christmas--you don't mind it, but it's not what you really wanted.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very solid beer. It had a full robust taste and a nice 8.3% ABV as an added bonus. This is the first Flying Dog beer that I've enjoyed and will be looking for this one in the future. A
ReplyDeleteI like it. I don't think it's awesome though. Doesn't taste like its 8.3% either. It does have the sweet crisp finish as mentioned in the description. I have a feeling I'm going to be more of a naughty person than a nice person. Grade 8 of 10, B-
ReplyDeleteNot shocking at all T. Never known you to be the nice type...
DeleteSweet but not too overwhelming. Another shocker with 8.3% without the strong boozy taste.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of flying dog I was looking forward to today and I was not let down one more hour then I try the other
ReplyDeleteOne of the few Flying Dog brews I actually like. Their blood orange ale is scrumptious and the Dead Rise just works for me for some odd reason. That typical nasty Flying Dog aftertaste is present here too but it balances very nicely with the sweetness, accidentally creating a well balanced and tasty brew! Hard to imagine Flying Dog doing that on purpose. B+
ReplyDeleteI'm coming around on Flying Dog, and this is another reason why. An excellent Belgian style that wasn't too sweet. Good stuff and I can't wait to try naughty. 4/5.
ReplyDeleteNice...but honestly, I am a little perplexed by this beer. Like the Belgian funk, not overly carbonated, and it has some complexity. It's the finish that gets me tho. It should have a rolling sweet finish of a golden but I'm left feeling like I'm drinking a lager. It has this crisp shitty finish that is reminiscent of a Heineken. Appreciate the buzz (doesn't feel like a 8% beer) but it just doesn't hit the spot for me.
ReplyDeleteI can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm not running out to have another one. I would prolly pass on it in the future if given the choice.
Apple juice? This was OK but I really wanted more in a Belgian style beer.
ReplyDelete"Just one please"
ReplyDeleteNot remarkable, expected Belgian flavors muted, bitter, but can't quite place the bitterness. Better Belgian blondes out there.
Not a fan of Flying Dog and not a fan of Belgian Ales. Almost drank flat for me. No head and flavors that did not excite.
ReplyDeleteD+
Sweet honey upfront followed instantly by belgian pale ethyl caprylate esters which give a little pear and slight anise. Herb-spice and dry fig come through on the finish.
