December 16 - Flying Dog's Naughty
Why we picked it: Naughty and Nice...how could we not pick it?
About Flying Dog's Naughty: You’re Naughty if…you came out of the womb knowing that the jolly fat man and his goddamn list is all a hoax to hold you down. Not only do you eat pieces of shit like Kimye for breakfast, you gorge on those bad boys for lunch, dinner and a midnight snack. You stand close to the fire because you like to get burned.
With this beer, we were a little Naughty, too. Go nuts with this Belgian-Style Dark Ale brewed with cinnamon, star anise, orange peel and habanero peppers for a bold mix of heat, citrus and spice.
Beer Advocate Score: Not rated yet
Specialty Malts: Pale, Cara Vienna, Special B

Fuck it...I'm taking these bitches back to back!
ReplyDeleteWow...love the Belgian funk in both but similarities end there.
Naughty always provides better head than nice, and this dark lady did not disappoint.
Deep, rich, malty, and funky in the nose. I get that orange peel for sure.
Habanero alert!!! Not sure how we ended up with 2 habanero ales...actually yes I do know how that happened...
First sip and everything changes! Rich and malty, funky and fruity...then it all goes sideways. No orange on the palate. Get this wonderfully dirty black licorice then slapped around with the habanero that provides a long slow burn. Habanero beautifully expressed in this dark, rich, Belgian strong. Like the influence of my beloved habs here much better than in an IPA format.
This is a little 12oz beast. Simply stated...I love it. Not for every day consumption, but it's an interesting little bitch that doesn't disappoint. I know some will not like her. I suppose not everyone appreciates a little S&M...such a shame.
This is another slow sipper and it would benefit from a dessert of some kind. Ima gonna grab some milk chocolate...be right back
Ok...things just got more interesting. Real nice with the milk chocolate...stayed away from the dark cuz some extra sweetness plays better.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who hates this right out the gate...put the beer down and go grab yourself some dessert. Preferably cake of some sort...chocolate would be great, but I'm still thinking about carrot cake after the suggested pairing of it with the Titan. I suppose fruitcake would work as well. Just think something rich and decadent. It changes the way the whole beer effects you. Totally softens the burn. Mayans were all about cinnamon and cayenne in their chocolate...its wrong in all the right ways.
I'm gonna stop running on at the mouth at this point...1 green bullet followed by 2 FD Belgian strongs and I am quite comfortable.
Luv y'all, hope you enjoy your adult beverage!
I love me some naughty....but not this beer. It's a better habanero version but still misses the mark for me. I am a big fan of Flying Dog but this might be my first bad beer of theirs.
ReplyDeleteSo I take back what I said last night about wishing it had been the Naughty night. I decided to not read the description or anything before diving in. Poured it in the glass and seemed like a standard Belgian dark. Took a whiff and got the oranges and spices and figured I was good to go. Took a sip. Waited a second. Hello, what is this. Burning. So much burning. I haven't had a beer burn this much since the habanero sculpin incident of December 2015. Stole some of my kids chicken nuggets which helped a bit. Read Tommy's writeups and grabbed a brownie from last weekend's christmas cookie exchange despite the fact that I haven't eaten dinner yet. Mild improvement. Although the fact that I am 75% through the beer (and had an appetizer beer before) makes me really want another brownie. I really think this would be a good beer without the habanero, but I just don't want fucking peppers in my fucking beer. That's it. I do like it better than the sculpin. At least with the other spices and the belgian dark style, the habanero is slightly muted instead of just tasting like one of the great IPAs ruined with some random freaking pepper.
ReplyDeleteIn other news, I'm supposed to make pumpkin bread for the office holiday party tomorrow. I'm guessing this bad boy on an empty stomach is going to make for some very interesting and highly controversial ad libbing of the recipe. Stupid habanero.
This did not get the best ratings on Untappd. Not many people like spicy and beer mixed together and I understand that. This one had a powerful kick in each sip but also good strong ale flavor. Since I like both strong ales and spiciness, this was perfect. If I didn't know the ABV and had to guess, I definitely would not have guessed 9%. Might need to pick up a wider for myself.
ReplyDeleteI'm told I like all the vile beer on this list so far, hey someone's gotta do it.
Shit this is one of the hardest things I've ever had to say but I was actually excited about trying this Flying Dog. And it didn't disappoint. The habanero is in your face but it's not overwhelming like the Sculpin. I'm undecided on whether it adds more to the mix or takes away from it. On one hand it completely destroy's that shitty Flying Dog aftertaste and on the other it also disguises the underlying beer. I have a feeling it would be a good beer on its own but I can't tell for sure. Never would've guessed habanero in a Belgian dark would work but it somehow does.
ReplyDeleteI hate to do it but I have to give bonus points for the dope theme with the sweet/spicy, light/dark beer contrast. I might go get a few more of these and make a black and tan (or a brown and gold I guess). Probably would taste shitty but the curiosity is getting to me. Anyway first and probably last time I'll say this but mad respect for Flying Dog with this theme. B!
Damn now I'm in the mood for a Habanero Sculpin....
Black and Tan idea = brilliant.
DeleteAfter last night's beer I was looking forward to tonight's. Just as I was getting ready to pour it into a glass, I caught sight of the label... habenero addded....NOOOO!!!! Not again. This one was a little more subtle than the ballast point beer thanks to the hint of orange. Overall it was tolerable, but I won't be seeking this one out in the future. It will go into the long line of beers by flying dog that I dont like.
ReplyDeleteI was mesmerized by the first half. I really liked the heat with the abundance of flavorful sweet. At about the halfway point, every sip tasted like a spicy black jelly bean. I'm ok with a little licorice flavor here and there, but it was overtaking my brain. I couldn't get it out of my head. That's the bad side of naughty sometimes... Life in spicy, black jelly bean purgatory.
ReplyDeleteThis is how you do habanero. So much better than the sculpin. After a couple sips, it settled into a nice flavor profile. I still would like to see the heat after taste taken down a notch, but I'm still pleased and would order another. As a side note, I like the idea of a Naughty-Nice combo for a single sitting, but think it would work better in reverse. Score: 3.5/5
ReplyDeleteAlso, love the diverse reactions.
DeleteI'm not sure about doing the naughty before nice.
DeleteA) it's kinda like having desert before the appetizer...not that it's a bad thing.
B) the habs might get the best if you and sully the flavor of the lighter ale
wow, 2 habanero beers in the 24. I am usually good for just one per year or so. Aside from the heat aftertaste, I did enjoy this. I love Belgian beers. Nice job Flying Dog
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the heat from the pepper, I think it took away from the tast of the beer. Also not a fan of the licorice taste either.
ReplyDeleteNot my favorite flying dog but this habanero beer is much more drinkable than the last one I can taste the orange peal in it
ReplyDelete"Just one please"
ReplyDeleteSorry, too much heat (pepper) for me. Overwhelming hot hide anything else that might have been there
I really thought I was going to like the naughty more than the nice. That was until I saw HABANERO! I will say that this is better than the Sculpin, but that is not saying much. I was able to drink all of it though, unlike the Sculpin that helped me clean out my sink drain. This year's 24 DoB will be know as the year of the habanero! Grade 6 of 10. D+. I guess I'm more nice than naughty...
ReplyDeleteNot my style on this guy. I don't mind the heat on this one but it's a bit too funky and liqourishy for me. As with all the beers so far, I'm glad I had the opportunity to try it. Never would have bought this on my own and now I know... and knowing is half the battle, Go Joe!
ReplyDeleteEven more so than the Nice, I was wary of the novelty factor with this one (did they add the pepper just to make it sound "naughty"?). Also, I'm not a big fan of anise (although it is an ingredient in Mexican chirizo, which is marvelous). Also, as I mentioned before, I love a good chili beer, but they're not all good.
ReplyDeleteI love this thing. The habanero is front and center, but it's not obnoxiously trying to steal the show from the other flavors, which are perfect for a winter beer. I will say that if I evaluate it based on balance (which is to me, is the most fundamental criteria of a good craft beer), the habanero could be dialed back a bit. That being said, I'm happy with this particular imbalance, which is nowhere near that of the infamous Sculpin.
Interestingly, my wife (not the biggest fan of chili heat) liked the pepper factor but not the rest of the beer. My son (who shares my fondness for chili heat) said he thought the beer could stand on its own without the pepper. What the?
I'm going to try and find some more of this. If I never have it again I will regret it.
So much jalapeño and cinnamon! very VERY warming. Also mixed this with the Nice for the Naughty & Nice Black and Tan combo. The jalapeño basically is just slowed down a little but succeeds in crushing the esters of the Nice.
