Why we picked it: Virginia Brewery
About Chaos Mountain's Cocoborealis: Indulge your senses in swirling layers of rich chocolate and coffee. Then ask yourself, how many chocolatey things can you add to a stout? We found three that we love. First we start out with two chocolate roasted malts. Then during brewing we add a big dose of rich cocoa powder. Finally we age this stout on (organic) cocao nibs. The result is a decadent dark chocolate “Liquid of the Gods” we like to call CocoBorealis: Triple Chocolate Stout.

ReplyDeleteI've been slacking on timely posts and that Anderson Valley had me in the mood for another I decided to crack this open early. That aroma hit within milliseconds and it smelled like a decandant chocolate heaven. I tilt it back for the first sip and was completely underwhelmed. It wasn't bad but it wasn't enough chocolate to proclaim itself as a Triple Chocolate Stout.
ReplyDeleteI was about to recommend those that like stuff like this to pick up Southern Tier Choklat (same people who do Pumking) for a taste of a real chocolate stout. And then it hit me. The beer's not the problem, it was me. I was expecting either Hershey's or a chocolate milkshake and got neither. The chocolate comes thru hard in the aftertaste and then it tastes like actual chocolate. Think semisweet chocolate not that sugary bullshit you see everytime your in the store. The aftertaste can be a bit too much but I like this. A-! I'm still choosing Bell's out of all the stouts this year and this gets 2nd place.
And for those that like this type of stuff, go get that Choklat if you haven't had it.
Dessert before dinner, this beer is just ok nothing great however I really appreciate trying a beer that I wouldn't usually go out of my way for. Cheers to this awesome annual event, I can't believe it's coming to a close soon.
ReplyDelete"Would accept another"
ReplyDeleteI didn't notice chocolate aroma but definitely chocolate throughout and not too overpowering. Warmed up a bit and this goes have a nice chocolate to a fine stout. I like this one!
This has a subtle chocolate taste with a strong coffee flavor. Hope this doesn't keep me up all night. I like my coffee black and this one is hitting the spot.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see triple chocolate on the bottle, I'm expecting heavy chocolate taste. I didn't taste hardly any chocolate. I am getting more triple coffee instead which is nice but I prefer a combination of both.
ReplyDeleteDisclaimer: I don't like porters/stout
ReplyDeleteI actually enjoyed this beer very much! Pour me another. Nice taste, silky smooth, and tasty
trying to catch up and trying the Mendocino's Black IPA. Wow what a difference and too IPA and too thick. This is worse than the porter/stout. YUCK
DeleteI am a dark chocolate addict and this hit the spot. I caught the chocolate flavor in the back of my mouth on the first couple of sips and the deeper I went into the glass the more I got the aroma (which was not prevalent at the beginning). Nice choice!
ReplyDeleteThis one won a bunch of awards in Virginia and chaos mountain has some of the craziest packages in the business.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure how I was gonna feel about this stout. I actually quite like this. I was expecting a huge shot of chocolate and am pleasantly surprised that it is restrained and complex with many layers. As a stout l, I find it a bit thin, but that doesn't totally piss me off for some reason.
Not gonna run out to find more of this, but sure am glad that I got to have one. I really want to try their IPA...it's called something like mad hopper with a crazy bunny on a motorcycle. I may seek that one out for shits and giggles
10 out of 48 participants today does however piss me off a bit
DeleteNot bad. Not sure if I could drink more then one but I definitely taste the chocolate
ReplyDeleteI would definitely drink another if I had one. Switching to bourbon instead.
DeleteChocolaty goodness. I admit I was skeptical this morning when I put it into the fridge with person of questionable sexual orientation on the label. Despite the weird label, this was a good beer and I wish I had another one. I didn't get any other flavors than chocolate. B
ReplyDeleteFairly certain those are boobs...I think I see a nipple
Delete"I have nipples, Greg, could you milk me?"
DeleteI'm a couple day behind and will be waiting until tomorrow or the day after to catch up. I'm sick and congested and wouldn't be able to enjoy or taste any of these. Good news is that it seems to be clearing up and I should be back at it soon!
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of stouts or chocolate, but I didn't completely hate this. I didn't love it either, but a solid, rich beverage. Score: 2/5.
ReplyDeleteNot a bad way to start your Christmas Day.
ReplyDeleteFeel better
Not sure what happened last night. Completely forgot to blog my beer. Just not like me. I apologize.
ReplyDeleteHad serious doubts about this despite the sweet bottle since chocolate is not something I really want in my beer. However, I didn't get much chocolate. Lots of coffee. Which I do like in my beer unless it's overdone (Terrapin, I'm looking at you). I thought this was really smooth and tasty. Still not a Guinness but I think in order for me to ignore the fact it's not a Guinness, a stout needs to have something extra to distinguish it. And a pleasing coffee flavor with a barely perceptible chocolate will do just that. Winner from the Commonwealth! (although I'll still take our breweries over your breweries).
I really dig this subtly chocolate stout! Half way through this beer, I was definitely aware of the coffee element as well as the hints of chocolate. Another great be I never would have chosen on my own. Thanks for including me!
ReplyDeleteB-
Cool name. Local brew. Naked lady on label. So far, so good. I'm getting more chocolate in the aroma than in the taste, but like others noted, I think that's because 1) the chocolate taste is subtle and 2) it's not that sweet like I thought it would be based on the description. So when I think of dark chocolate, it starts to make sense - a little bitter, playing nice with the hops, and giving it that hint of coffee-ish essence. I would like to have another.
ReplyDeleteMocha. Thats the one word I would use to sum this beer up with if I could only pick one. Very smooth but dare I say not enough chocolate! Lighter bodied than I expected. Overall it's decent, but I was expecting a super-heavy chocobomb.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm late, but damnit I am determined to finish. I was sick and couldn't taste a thing so had to put this last few beers off until I was certain I was better. This one doesn't do it for me. I get the chocolate and coffee. I dislike coffee a lot, so this beer doesn't really have a chance. Grade 6 of 10, D+
