Dec. 25 (BONUS) | Celebration | Sierra Nevada Brewing

Why
We Picked It:
Due to an ordering mix-up from Maple Lawn, we didn't, which is one of the greatest tragedies in the history of 24DOB. So we are 24+1, but it is up to you to go out and find your own Celebration (they are readily available at any credible beer and liquor store).

What Sierra Nevada Says About It: The start of Celebration season is a festive event. Once the first fresh hops arrive from harvest, the party begins! We first brewed Celebration in 1981, blazing the path for American-style IPAs and offering a new take on holiday beers, which are often spiced and sweet. Famous for its citrus and pine aromas, Celebration is bold and intense, featuring Cascade, Centennial and Chinook hops—honoring everything we have at Sierra Nevada

Style:  IPA - American

ABV: 6.8%

IBU: 65

To Better Know A Brewery: Turns out, good beer can do a lot of good. We shook things up in the ’80s, and it helped launch a beer revolution that’s in full force today. We keep pushing boundaries, whether that’s in the brewhouse, with sustainability, or in the great outdoors.

Note: No poll this time as this is the unofficial 24DOB+. Also, if you are not drinking a Celebration, feel free to share whatever it is that you are having today. I hope to have poll results to share soon.

Dec. 24 | Mad Elf | Troegs Independent Brewing

Why We Picked It: Because we are as mad as a drunk elf.

What Troegs Says About It: The Holidays at Troegs start with our inner Mad Elf momentarily taking over the brew deck. So blame “him” for this cheerful ruby red creation reminiscent of ripened cherries, raw honey, and cocoa with notes of cinnamon, clove, and allspice.

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

ABV: 11%

IBU: 15

Dec. 23 | Merry Monkey | Victory Brewing

Why We Picked It: A holiday brews from a favorite regional brewery, Victory.

What Victory Says About It: This belgian-style holiday ale combines the beloved flavor profile of golden monkey with notes of cranberry, orange peel, cinnamon and nutmeg to deliver a delightfully smooth finish, perfect for merry gatherings with family and friends.

Style: Belgian Strong Golden Ale / /

ABV: 10%

IBU: 35

To Better Know A Brewery: Headquartered in Downingtown, PA, Victory Brewing Company is a craft brewery founded by Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet. In 1996, Victory opened its doors to serve full-flavored, innovative beers putting curiosity and inspiration from their travels and the world around them into each delicious, high-quality beer. Dec. 22| Christmas Ale | Great Lakes Brewing

Why We Picked It: Good brewery and a respected holiday brew that - for some reason - has not appeared in 24 Days of Beer since 2014!

What Great Lakes Says About It: Do not open ‘til Christmas? Whoever coined that phrase obviously hasn’t tasted Christmas Ale’s fresh honey, cinnamon, and ginger flavors. There is a yuletides worth of holiday spice and sweet honey to you a-wassailing all season long.

Style: Winter Ale

ABV: 7.5%

IBU: 30

To Better Know A Brewery: Two Irish brothers with limited brewing experience. A city that shuttered its last production brewery in the early 80s. A neighborhood in serious need of a facelift. In 1986 when Patrick and Daniel Conway opened their fledgling operation in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood, the odds were stacked against them. Fortunately, they surrounded themselves with a staff of passionate, knowledgeable people, and from the start committed themselves to bringing a sophisticated, diverse selection of craft beer to their home state. Two decades, multiple awards, and a whole lot of stories later, Pat and Dan Conway celebrate over two decades of brewing exceptional beer for their adventurous and discerning customers.

Dec. 21 | 2XMas | Southern Tier Brewing

Why We Picked It: Essentially, I made them. For those who haven't been bored by this info already, Southern Tier is essentially from my hometown of Jamestown, NY. (technically it the tiny little town of Lakewood, adjacent to  While I generally like to slag on J-town a bit, it still amazes me that an early(ish) pioneer in craft brewing decided to set up camp there, and I have visited the awesome brewery several times (one of the few things to do there, to be honest). I also love this brew as it is a true reflection of the area (very Swedish), plus my Swedish wife makes the referenced holiday Glögg (I had some earlier this week). Oh, as a bonus, this historically drives Bill nuts.

What Southern Tier Says About It: Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition. 2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

Style: Winter Warmer

ABV: 8%

IBU: 40

To Better Know A Brewery: Since our humble beginnings, Southern Tier Brewing Company has grown into an industry leader and world-class brewery. As demand has grown over the years, Southern Tier has expanded to a 110 BBL Steinecker brewhouse. Surrounding the brewhouse is the packaging hall with keg, bottle, and can production lines as well as our ever-growing farm of fermenters and state-of-the-art brewing quality lab. From our wildly innovative founder, Phin DeMink, who’s still a daily inspiration, to the new generation of brewers who share our pursuit of what’s next, we keep honing the creative edge of brewing discovery. Our brewing team utilizes a 2BBL and 25 BBL system for smaller batches to test new and cutting-edge ideas. Many of these beers are available in our taprooms.

Dec. 20 | Merry Christmas & Happy New Year (2020) | Anchor Steam

Why We Picked It: We always like to have Anchor Steam Merry Christmas in 24DOB as the recipe deviates probably more than most of the annual holiday brews. Others tweak in strength and amount of ingredients, but the entire taste can shift with Achor Steam. Also, note that they change that label every year and employ a different artist.

What Anchor Steam Says About It: The 2020 Anchor Christmas Ale is a one-of-a-kind, featuring the highest ABV at 7% and darkest appearance of any vintage. Yet, this year’s release is easy-drinking and approachable for everyone at a holiday gathering or virtual event.

Anchor’s 2020 Christmas Ale is silky-smooth and layered with classic holiday flavors of chocolate, toasted marshmallows and graham crackers - perfect for enjoying at the end of the meal, or around a fire with close friends. This winter warmer teems with aromas of fresh coffee and dark chocolate, and pours with a tight, creamy cappuccino-colored head.

Each year a new symbolic hand-drawn tree is chosen for the Christmas Ale label. This year’s label features The Three Graces; three iconic towering sequoias from the Mariposa Grove in California’s Yosemite National Park. This is only the second time in its 46-year history that multiple trees are shown together on the label, a fitting statement to symbolize togetherness and hope in a year when so much time has been spent apart. The Three Graces represent radiance, joy, and flowering – characteristics that we can all hold near during this unprecedented time.

Style: Winter Warmer

ABV: 7%

IBU: 40

To Better Know A Brewery: Our annual Christmas Ale is a subtly spiced and sumptuously smooth winter warmer. This year’s brew marks the 46th annual release of this Anchor holiday tradition. Back in 1975, Anchor released the first holiday beer in America since Prohibition. Year after year, Anchor creates a new, secret recipe with a unique hand drawn label for their Christmas Ale, but the intent with each brew remains the same: joy for the changing seasons and celebration of the newness of life. With a heavily guarded, confidential recipe, Christmas Ale is sold only from early November to mid-January.

Dec. 19 | Christmas Ale | Bell's Brewery

Why We Picked It: Bell's Two Hearted has won are beer loving hearts, and it's always fun to throw a wee heavy into the mix.

What Bell's Says About It: This traditional Scotch Ale is rich and malty with notes of caramel and a warm finish. Certain to make any occasion festive, or at least a bit more bearable. Enjoy with the company of friends and family.

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

ABV: 7.5%

IBU: N/A

Dec. 18 | Holiday Ale | Two Roads Brewery

Why We Picked It: A holiday brew we've never had from a brewery we like.

What Two Roads Says About It: Two Roads Holiday Ale is inspired by the little known Biere de Noel style, a subset of Biere de Garde, both of which originated on small farmhouse breweries in the north of France. Biere de Noel, which translates as “Christmas Beer," tends to exhibit a more malty profile than a typical Biere de Garde. In its native France this special type of ale is brewed by just a handful of small breweries and is only available for the few weeks leading up to Christmas.

Style: Farmhouse Ale

ABV: 7.3%

IBU: N/A

To Better Know A Brewery: Two Roads Brewing Company was founded in 2012 by four friends who dreamed for years of starting a craft brewery. We foster a “road less traveled” philosophy in the beers we make and how we make them. In that spirit, Phil Markowski, our award-winning Brewmaster and 27 year craft beer veteran has created an extensive lineup that takes a unique twist on classic beer styles. Two Roads was named one of the ten best breweries in America by Paste Magazine and has won many awards including gold for Belgian Lambic style Ale in 2016 at the Great American Beer Festival.

Two Roads isn’t just the logo on our brewery building, it’s our philosophy. Life always seems to offer up two ways to go. It just so happens, we prefer the one less taken and having some fun along the way – in our lives, our careers and especially for our beers! Now our “road less traveled” philosophy is being brought to life in the beers that we create and how we create them.

Dec. 17 | Tank 7 | Boulevard Brewing

Why We Picked It: Boulevard and Tank 7 are one of the old school craft brew, from a time before IPA drove a massive craft brewery explosion. This first time since 2014 that it has appeared in 24DOB.

What Boulevard Says About It: When our brewers were experimenting with variations on a traditional Belgian-style farmhouse ale, the perfect combination of elements came together in fermenter number seven. You could call it fate, but they called it Tank 7, and so it is. Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.

Style: Farmhouse Ale - Saison

ABV: 8.5%

IBU: 38

Dec. 16 | Troegenator | Troegs Independent Brewing

Why We Picked It: Troegs has a long history in 24 Days of Beer, and it goes beyond Mad Elf. I had one not long ago on Dan's deck and it reminded me that this is an excellent brew that should be included. Plus, its a sweet label. Somehow, this seems to the 24DOB debut for doublebock.

What Troegs Says About It: MONKS HAD FASTING FIGURED OUT.No food? No problem. Just drink a Double Bock. Thick and chewy with intense notes of caramel, chocolate and dried stone fruit, ‘Nator (as we call him) serves as a tribute to this liquid bread style.

Style: Bock - Doublebock

ABV: 8.2%

IBU: 25

To Better Know A Brewery: Good beer brings out the good in people. Whether we’re working on a new beer recipe, building a seasonal menu, or deciding how to serve our community, the first question we ask is: Why? When it comes to ‘aletruism,’ asking why helps us focus our priorities and the ways in which we serve the people, places and resources who’ve helped us along the way.

Dec. 15 | Van Dammit | Jailbreak Brewing

Why We Picked It: Jailbreak is an excellent Laurel-brewery where I celebrated some birthday at some point. They all blur at some point.  It usually makes an appearance in recent 24DOBs. Another high ABV brew (Sorry Adam. Your welcome Andrew.)

What Jailbreak Says About It: A traditionally crafted Belgian Dark Strong Ale with notes of plum, raisin, and figs. The deep and complex malt backbone starts sweet and finishes clean and dry. Enjoy the finest in Belgian martial artistry.

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale

ABV: 9%

IBU: 27

To Better Know A Brewery: Jailbreak is a freedom expression. Beginning in 2013, and becoming fully operational in 2014, our artfully crafted beer is meant to be an escape from whatever drama is present in your life. We are made up of professionals from various industries, all brought together by the common desire to make something different and do something with our lives that has more purpose.

Dec. 14 | K Kapowski Amber Ale | Black Flag Brewing

Why We Picked It: The Save By The Bell reference seemed to go over pretty well this summer with Z Morris, so why not K Kapowski. Sorry fellow SBTB fans, but I will probably draw a line if they come out with a S Powers beer.

What Black Flag Says About It: Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

Style: Lager - Amber

ABV: 4.8%

IBU: 20

To Better Know A Brewery: See yesterday. They are a modest crew (and really need a new website)

Dec. 13 | Steady Hoist | Black Flag Brewing

Why We Picked It: I picked this up straight from the brewery on Snowden River. A fan of the brewery and this is not one I had before. Also wanted to have lagers represented.

What Black Flag Says About ItDark Lager brewed with flavorful German base and munich malts as well as a touch of blackprinz malt to impart a smooth flavor along with its black color. Very lightly hopped with all German hops.

Style: Lager - Dark

ABV: 5.2%

IBU: 15

To Better Know A Brewery: Established 2015 we are the first production brewery and taproom in Columbia; now with 16 taps. Located on Snowden River Parkway behind Lincoln Tech's large parking lot. To get to us, turn at the traffic light onto the unnamed road by the parking lot.

Dec. 12 | Dragon's Milk | New Holland Brewing

Why We Picked It: By far the most expensive selection, we decided to reach a bit on this one and try some that is a bit more high shelf and

What New Holland Says About It: Throughout the ages, Dragon’s Milk has been used as a term to describe potent ales and elixirs worth of celebration – a reward at the end of the journey. We are proud to be stewards of that ancient tradition today, hand-crafting each batch of Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout in Holland, Michigan. The best liquid in our house is now yours.

Style: Stout - Imperial/Double / /

ABV: 11%

IBU:  30

To Better Know A Brewery: It all started for us in 1997 when Brett VanderKamp believed that his hometown and the brewing industry were due for a shakeup. And so, New Holland Brewing Company was born in Holland, Michigan near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Today, New Holland is recognized as one of the leading innovators in the revolution of craft brewing and distilling. Dec. 11 | Siren Noire | Heavy Seas Beer

Why We Picked It: Heavy Seas is a local pioneer in craft brews and always seems to sneak its way into the 24 days of beer. Pounders Pils appeared this summer; Night Swell in the 2019 Holiday edition; and Winter Storn in Holiday 2017.

What Heavy Seas Says About It: We use nearly 3 pounds of Belgian coco nibs per barrel of Siren Niore. This imperial chcocolate stout is not shy—five weeks in bourbon barrels gives this beer its punch, and vanilla beans give it a creamy, soft sweetness. It’s well-rounded body is decidedly chocolatey—but not extraordinarily sweet. Chocolate lovers—have at it.

Style: Stout - Imperial/Double

ABV: 9.5%

IBU:  19

To Better Know A Brewery:  We have a pretty clear sense of purpose, make beers that taste exactly the way they should. Every time. No frills. No fluff. We weren’t created by Baltimore’s original craft brewer to be thought leaders, or to thump our chests, or to see who we could outdo. We started this revolution for one reason only: to make ridiculously good beer without any of the ridiculousness.

No matter how popular craft brewing gets, we believe in the craft of brewing. And to us, making beer that people can drink and actually enjoy is what keeps us cranking.

Where we come from, really good beer doesn’t need to be something it’s not. In fact, it never should be. Turns out, really good beer isn’t tricky after all. It boils down to a simple recipe everybody else seems to have forgotten: make it drinkable, make it approachable, execute to the highest possible standards, and have some fun. That’s not just what matters most—it’s the only thing that matters at all.

Dec. 10 | Diamonds Are Forever | 3 Stars Brewing

Why We Picked It: I miss baseball (but maybe not the Nationals) and have enjoyed 3 Stars (big fan of the Peppercorn Saison).

What 3 Stars Says About It: Super crisp, easy drinking hazy pale ale that has been double dry hopped with Mosaic and Amarillo. Notes of grapefruit, tangerine zest, and oranges pop on the flavor before giving away to a clean, refreshing crispness.

Style: Pale Ale - New England

ABV: 4.5%

IBU: N/A

To Better Know A Brewery: 3 Stars Brewing Company is a brewery delivering on the promise of bringing locally handcrafted ales to the DC beer community. Dec. 9 | Sweet Baby Java | DuClaw Brewing

Why We Picked It: This one peaked Jeremy's attention and is a nice twist on DuClaws popular Sweet Baby Jesus.

What DuClaw Says About It: Our single bestselling beer of all time, Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, Hop Gunned with cold-steeped, whole bean espresso to infuse it’s iconic, lightly sweet chocolate and peanut butter flavor and aroma with warm notes of coffee… without any additional bitterness! One sip of Sweet Baby Java and you’ll wonder, “Where has this bean all my life?”

Style: Porter - Coffee

ABV: 6.2%

IBU: 53

To Better Know A Brewery: From the time he set foot on a college campus, Dave Benfield was expected to go into the family business as an electrical contractor. But rather than learning the business in his free time, Dave was spending his waking hours homebrewing, drinking his homebrew, and sharing the amazing liquid with others. One day, his father said to him, you’re going to be a brewer, aren’t you?

DuClaw brewery was born when our founder, Dave Benfield, followed his passion and started brewpubs in Maryland. Later, he transitioned the focus of the brewery towards a bottling and canning business so he could get more DuClaw to more people. Always cherishing the craft, never following the obvious path. Craft Be Cherished. Rules Be Damned.

Dec. 8 | Black Chocolate Stout | Brooklyn Brewery

Why We Picked It: People like chocolate. People like stouts. I'm not either of these people but I've been told others are. Besides Brooklyn makes me think of the Hold Steady.

What Brooklyn Says About It: Originally our Brewmaster Garrett Oliver’s resume beer, Black Chocolate Stout is now a wintertime favorite among beer fans worldwide. Rich roasted malts come together to create an unmistakable dark chocolate flavor perfect for special occasions and late nights by the fire.

Style: Stout - Russian Imperial

ABV: 10%

We’ve met wonderful people in remarkable places, and we can’t wait to show everyone what’s next.

Dec. 7 | Banana Bread Beer | Eagle Brewery

Why We Picked It: One of the goals for 24 days of beer is to try things you would never otherwise try. This one fits perfectly in that description. This is also our only import with the brewery based in Bedford, United Kingdom.

What Eagle Says About It: Long ago, ale was known as 'liquid bread'. ... Fairtrade bananas to awaken the senses with a seriously fruity, rich, yet surprisingly versatile Banana Bread Beer.

Style: Fruit beer

ABV: 5.2%

IBU: 18

Websitehttps://eaglebrewery.co.uk/.uk/

To Better Know A Brewery: The eagle has been associated with the town of Bedford for centuries, but you will notice there’s a difference in the way the Eagle Brewery represents its bird, it looks to the left, we believe this represents the company’s unique point of view. To this day, Eagle Brewery embraces different perspectives. It means that while others may move cautiously, we soar fearlessly. Like the eagle that looks over our brewery, we take a different view.

Dec. 6 | Mosaic Splendor | Manor Hill Brewing

Why We Picked It:  I used to be pretty cool on Manor Hill (not a fan of the Grisette), but Jeremy and Bill had me give them a second look this summer with the blonde ale and then I finally visited the farm this summer. I've completely flipped and my favorite brewery to visit around here (except maybe Red Shedman).

What Manor Hill Says About It: The next in our Splendor Series, Mosaic Splendor pours a hazy gold color with a big white head. With an abundance of sweet tropical papaya, guava, and mango fruit flavors, this beer packs a punchy bitterness combined with tropical citrus aromas and a lingering fruity finish.

Style:  Double IPA

ABV:  8.3%

IBU:  N/A

To Better Know A Brewery: Located on the Marriner Family’s 54-acre working farm in Ellicott City, Manor Hill Farm is home to Manor Hill Brewing… Howard County’s first, and Maryland’s largest, farm brewery. Dec. 5 | Eruption | Union Brewing

Why We Picked It: I pre-ordered this one when seeing a case at Maple Lawn as soon as I saw Union and double IPA (my fav style).

What Union Says About It: The arena is oversold. The band is in the middle of a blistering set. Malt, Water, and Yeast take a break and head backstage while Hops lights another cig and sits on an amp under the spotlight. With a quick puff and the flash of a smile, the Eruption begins. Waves of flavor pour over the crowd — Pear, melon, tropical pineapple, and white grape build to a maddening crescendo followed in quick succession by black tea and a honey-like sweetness. The bombast and indulgence come to a slow lava-like ooze that sticks to the palate with a gentle, soft body as the band returns to the stage.

Style: Double IPA

ABV: 7.6%

IBU: 30

To Better Know A Brewery: Beer is the union of water, barley, hops and yeast. A brewery is the union of beer, its brewers and the community it serves. Beer Unites! is not just a tagline, it’s the underlying philosophy of everything we believe in as a business. Good beer brings good people together for good times—and good works.

Located within the Union Collective business hub in the Medfield neighborhood of Baltimore, MD, Union Craft Brewing makes great beer and great company. With reverence for tradition and place, we brew beers that unite old and new ideas, the science and craft of brewing, and boldness and balance of flavor.

Founded in the fall of 2011 by Kevin Blodger, Adam Benesch and Jon Zerivitz, brewing operations officially began in the spring of 2012 with the installation of a 20 barrel brewhouse and the initial launch of Duckpin Pale Ale.

After 5 years, UNION moved their production plant and tap room up the road to a 148,000 sq ft, former Sears warehouse that now houses the Union Collective of small, local manufacturers and Earth Treks Climbing gym.

Dec. 4 | 1996 | Hysteria Brewing

Why We Picked It: I love to pick up some local brews straight from the brewery. Hysteria is about 10 mins from the house and American IPAs may still be my favorite among all the growing beer styles out there.

What Hysteria Says About It: We wanted to throw it back to what got us into craft beer in the first place...nice, clean West Coast IPA's. This beer is perfect for drinking with anything, including as you cry by yourself about life.

Style:  IPA - American

ABV:  6.5%

IBU: 66

To Better Know A Brewery: It started with a single batch and grew from there. Our passion or "uncontrollable excitement" for crafting beer that's not afraid to be beer. Three friends who more or less fancied themselves mad scientists were playing off of the inventors that came before them, so often thought of as mad for their ideas.

We've set out to create an environment drawing on the innovative, collaborative, and community driven atmosphere that makes craft beer so special. We believe a business can be a valuable part of the community and aim to elevate the lives of our patrons, offering a welcoming, (pet) friendly and encouraging taproom experience. We aim to collaborate with our friends and neighbors in the DMV area to create a truly unique product distinct to the place we call home.

We strive to make bold, flavorful beers with an eye on the ever evolving techniques that make brewing today so great, and are committed to continual experimentation.

HEAVILY COMMITTED PEOPLE.
INSANELY FULL FLAVORED BEER.

Dec. 3 | Early to Rise | Monument City Brewing

Why We Picked It: Beer for breakfast again. Sure. Also, a new style from a Baltimore favorite of mine (I recommend the 51 Rye). Monument also had an appearance in 24DOB 2018 with its Pagoda Pale Ale, which received mostly middling reviews and discussion of John Quincy Adams and pay phones near the Baltimore Pagoda.

What Monument Says About It: Not a damn thing. Seriously, there are only 68 total Untapped rankings and no mention of it on the website. Even Beer Advocate doesn't mention it! I don't know if we should be excited or terrified of that fact.

Style: Stout - Coffee

ABV: 6%

IBU: N/A

To Better Know A Brewery: Founded by brothers, Ken and Matt Praay, Monument City Brewing was born while on a transformative hike along the Appalachian Trail.  The two brothers, already homebrewers, traded stories about their favorite craft beers and beers they had created. Upon their return, they set out to create a family-owned brewery making world-class craft beer for their community. Today, Monument City Brewing produces some of the finest ales and lagers Maryland has to offer.
