  1. Worked late Tuesday and enjoyed a pint of devils backbone IPA (fantastic brewery by the way) while I counted the $ and closed the restaurant tonight, drove home, then enjoyed the stout, now moving on to the brekenridge porter (it is tomorrow at this point anyway).

Allagash black Belgian stout - American "Belgian style" stout...Pretty damn amazing idea! Ya get a little of that "Belgian funk" but it's subdued by the deep rich flavor of this ale (yes...stouts are most certainly ales). If you are the type of person that wants to come home from work and have 1 beer (then move on to whisky like I do) this is an amazing choice. I will look out for this beer in the future and if I ever see it on draft, it would be my 1st choice.

Brekenridge vanilla porter - I was in brekenridge 2 weeks ago and I tasted this (never enjoyed a full pint) right before going tubing. I wasn't particularly impressed by the taste (when faced with the choice of so many fantastic Colorado craft brews) but I could appreciate it. Drinking it now I feel mostly the same way, but I don't have all those other choices. That being said, I think that it is awesome that we are drinking this beer today. It is well made and tasty...just a little sweet for my taste.

Amazing selections so far...there are a few of you that I wish would absolutely quit your bitchin'!!! We have been exposed to a fantastic pallette of interesting beers. Enjoy and realize that there is a time and place for each and every well crafted beer...tonight might not be that night, but appreciate each one on its merits... Not that it's not (gag) miller lite.

I'm a little late but, bolts and dj...happy birthday!!!

  2. Again, I like the dark beers. This tastes good. And I managed to not shart myself today so double bonus. Now it's time to head to the shooting range and test out my new trigger for my Kel-Tec. I installed it myself so it's either correct or I will be one finger typing for the rest of my life. Wish me luck.

  3. Can I just say I for the record I expected to hate this beer based on name alone? Yup, tastes like last night's beer with a shot of vanilla. Bill gets mine again.

  4. I'm a little disappointed we didn't have 12 beers of 12% alcohol for today. This beer reminds me when you go to the Five Guys with the high-tech vending machine where you push the buttons and everything comes out the same dispenser and the person ahead of you had vanilla coke and so your coke still tastes like vanilla coke. I would really like to get my hands on the Breckenridge Porter. I'm not a porter fan, but I but this would be tasty. But I don't need vanilla in my beer.

In other news, I'm enjoying the recent posts from Natty Light.

  5. Just checked the website. This is their only porter. Opportunity lost.

  6. I agree with Tommy about the selection. There are a lot of beers we have had that I would not normally taste. Thanks for the new selection. I think this beer would be very interesting without the vanilla beans. It is smooth.

  7. Wow was this sweet and I usually don't mind sweet tasting things. Too vanilly for me and I like vanilla so I am sure Bill and Ivan may pass on this. I gotta say though it was very smooth (can't stand porters and felt like I wouldn't be able to handle this or finish it) and surprising light. I was able to finish it but just can't get past the vanilly aftertaste.

  8. Two words, Guiness Lite. It was smooth going down and I enjoyed the vanilla aftertaste. At 4.7% ABV, I could easily find myself enjoying a sixer of these watching a game or movie. I hope that Cassandra falls asleep again before finishing hers so I can have another soon. 8 out of 10.

  9. Vanilla beans from Paupau New Guinea. I'm calling bullshit on that. They probably just bought them at the Whole Foods in Breckenridge. Other than lying to us, not too bad of a beer.

  10. Tasty! Not too sweet this time -- I could drink a half dozen of these in a row.

  11. Now this is more like it!!! Definitely liked this Porter! Perfect beer on a day when the temps continue to get lower. I actually liked the vanilla flavor. For me, I tasted the vanilla at the end of each sip and it is excellent every time. My only wish is that this beer receives more ABV in the future. In other news, Luca had his sixth month appointment and received a clean bill of health!! Unfortunately, my 5'3" frame is not helping his height -- 25th percentile. His grandfather and uncle on Amy's side measure over six feet, so there's that. Bring on more dark beers, it's wintertime after all!!

  12. I hated this beer. Vanilla? Who ever thinks that would go well with beer? Ever. First one I almost poured down the sink.

    Grade: ungradeable

  14. Now this one I liked. Nice flavor on the nose, lovely vanilla aftertaste. For those who don't think it goes together have you never read Cannery Row? (http://insidescoopsf.sfgate.com/blog/2012/09/28/how-john-steinbeck-pondered-the-beer-milkshake-long-before-red-robin/) Anyhoo, I liked it, I would have more than one. Justin, for the record, doesn't agree. He gave me his other half to finish. His loss.

And also for the record I whole heartedly agree with the sentiments of thanks to the organizers (Tony, Mark, and others) who have let us have a fun December of trying out less-familiar beer. When I'm having a long day at work it is definitely a happy time when I think of the half beer waiting for me in the fridge and the funny comments from you all that accompany it.

  15. I had this beer about three months ago at a friend's house, and poured it down the drain. Needless to say I was NOT looking forward to it last night. But being a trooper, I decided to give it a go.

    I loved it.

So I texted my friend and gave him the puzzling news. Only then did he reveal that the Vanilla Porter we had at his house had been in his fridge for probably three years (which included several multi-day power outages). I never really bought in to the whole skunked beer concept. I always just thought it was an excuse people used to justify how bad college beer is ("Oh man, this case of The Beast must've gotten skunked.....we should just shotgun these....").

    But I'm a believer now.

  16. Just finish another porter tasting today and this was very good beer to compare to some other. Very balance, not too bitter with soft vanilla notes. Very surprise on the weight of that beer, it was lighter than I was ready for and definitively not too sweet either. Nice job on that selection!

  17. A day behind as I recover from a flu. This was a nice get-well treat. While I tend not to love sweet stuff, I didn't find this one too bad probably because I like the aroma of vanilla. This was more coffee with a nice vanilla after taste. Plus, it is not a vanilla-y as th Saranac Vanilla Stout. Looking forwrd the Eddie Fitz later tonight.

  18. I apologize for not getting to this one until today. I was at work until after 7 this morning. But what a way to relax after tending to the dregs of the city. This one was great! I would definitely have 7-8 of these. I'm thinking a good pairing would be with nachos or chocolate cake. I would totally recommend this one over the "Black" one, and both are exquisite! I'm sure some people will say that they would rather have their Miller Lite or what ever day-beer it is that they prefer but not this guy!!

  19. I'm not a fan of stouts or pouters, but the couple we have had so far in the 24 Days of Beer are not that bad and I kind of like them. Maybe my tastes are changing. I didn't get a lot of the vanilla taste, but thats OK with me. I say this beer is pretty good and would have it again in the right setting. 7 out of 10, B-

  20. I've always preferred chocolate to vanilla -- though not by that much. (Strawberry was always the leftover flavor in the Neapolitan ice cream carton.) And maybe I would have liked this one more if I hadn't had the chocolate-y Allagash Black only a few minutes before. But I thought the vanilla flavor here was too over-the-top. But, that said, it's not a bad beer by any stretch. One I should probably have as my first beer of the night to give it a more honest shake.
