December 18 - Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale

Why we picked it:  It's by Terrapin and Dave Johnson is a University of Maryland alum, so if this one sucks, it's Dave's fault.

About Terrapin's Rye Pale AleBy using an exact amount of rye, a grain seldom found in other micro brewed beers, the Rye Pale Ale acquires its signature taste. Made with five varieties of hops and a generous amount of specialty malts, it offers a complex flavor and aroma that is both aggressive and well balanced – a rare find among beers.

The Terrapin Rye Pale Ale was released in Athens, GA in April of 2002 at the Classic City Brew Fest. Six months later this beer which was sold only in Athens was awarded the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival, the most prestigious competition in North America. We hope you will agree with our peers in the brewing industry that this is truly one of the best pale ales in the country.

Food: This beer cries out for spicy foods to match it’s hoppy flavors…jerk chicken to shrimp and grits.

ABV5.5%

  1. The most unusual beer so far. I honestly can't tell if I like or not. I continue drinking this beer and still can't decide. And I continue to drink it and drink it and then I finished it and still can't decide. I can not describe the taste but I love the name!! Fear the Turtle! I am going to get more of these!

  2. I could pretty much drink Pale Ales all day every day. I'm not sure I find it as unique as the description indicates so I'm not sure the rye makes it that special but I think it's a great beer. I drank it very quickly and would love to have 5 more.

  3. Enjoyed this beer and would definitely drink again. Got nice flavor, but not overwhelming. A little bit too heavy, but one of the better beers thus far. Throw in the name and clearly I'm a big fan.

  4. I wasn't that impressed with this beer and found it kinda bland. Though I didn't like this beer, it wasn't horrible either and could give it another shot in the future.

  5. The Terp beer taste pretty decent for an ale. Decent taste plus a hillbilly, banjo-playing Terp on the label = my favorite ale yet.

  6. Like Joe, I can't really decide if I like it or not. It's drinkable but definitely not my favorite.

  7. I like this beer but probably just because I like pale ales. Though as far as pale ales go, I don't think this is anything special. I'll give it a 7.0 out of 10, C+

  8. I just took a poop and then ladled the poop water and drank from it. The poop water tasted much better than this Terrapin's Rye Pale Ale.

    Grade - sucks ass!!
