December 5 - Smuttynose's Robust Porter

Why we picked it:  Received a 94 out of 100 rating from Total Wine.  Received an A rating from BeerAdvocate.com

About Smuttynose Robust Porter:

GOLD MEDAL WINNER - Porter , 2001 Great American Beer Festival
JUDGED GRAND CHAMPION - Best Porter in the USA - 10th Annual US Beer Tasting Championship
GOLD MEDAL WINNER - 2010 Mondial de la Biere, Strasbourg, France

This hearty, mahogany colored ale is brewed to evoke the dark, full-bodied ales that were a favorite of dockworkers and warehousemen (hence the name “Porter”) in 19th century London. It is a good bet that when Dickens’ Mr. Pickwick sat down for a pint, we would have been drinking an ale much like our Robust Porter. This is a smooth and very drinkable beer, characterized by its well-balanced malt and hops, plus subtle notes of coffee and chocolate.

Full-bodied and malty with undertones of coffee and chocolate and a bright, hoppy finish, in style it’s like Cary Grant's accent: the best of British and American.” - The Boston Globe, November, 2005

ABV:  5.7%

Case Cost:  $35

  1. Looking forward to trying this one tonight. if nothing else, from the write-up I learned where the term "Porter" comes from.

  2. Its kind of weird that there isn't anywhere close to 24 reviews for each beer. I'm guessing there will be several people with 12 random beers in their fridge when this is over.

  3. Yeah...where are the reviews??? I don't have high hopes for this beer, but I'm hoping it will surprise me.

  4. YUCK! I did not like Porter's before and still don't. This is liking drinking a more thick version of a cold espresso without the caffeine. I should have been in some coffee shop instead of eating dinner or watching a game. And if this is the best Porter there is given all the awards, then I am not looking forward to try another one ever.

  6. Apparently I was logged in as my wife.

My review: This beer has a ton of flavor. You know what else has a lot of flavor? Dog shit. Can I have my $1.39+tax back?

    Grade: Rather drink lighter fluid

  7. The key to this beer is to have it with some chocolate. A nice porter with a ton of flavor. Rating: 7

  8. This was a surprise to me. I went into this thinking I was going to hate it. I don't think it's terrible and I am almost enjoying it. Could only have one or two of these though.

    I'll give it a 7 out of 10, C.

  9. I don't like this, however I think it's better than last night's beer. Check minus.

  10. Full disclosure - I love Stouts and Porters. With that being written, I enjoyed this beer very much. I would definitely have many if offered the option.

  11. Not awful. I wouldn't have more than one.

  12. I've never been a fan of porters. This tastes exactly like a standard porter. Sort of heavy and too much coffee flavor for my tastes. Hate to say it, but I agree with Joe.

Full disclosure. I went on a bender in Chicago for the weekend so I've got 3 spare beers in my fridge. It's not acceptable to drink a beer at 6 am before going to BWI so Friday was out. TSA regulations didn't allow me to bring Saturday's beer. And after drinking approximately 25 other beers over two days, I just couldn't handle my Sunday beer. I'll make it up. Just not tonight.

  13. If for some strange reason this was the only alcohol left on earth, I'd just go sober.

  14. Since I've not giving awards at a beer judging, I've been making my reviews the following morning. This allows me time to let the flavors set in and not make quick inaccurate judgements. It's like watching anchorman, funny the first time but hilarious the second and third time around. That being said, I am still on the fence about this beer. It was good but not great, I would definatly like to try another one. I give it a B

  16. Don't have much to say about this beer. I didn't hate it, but not sure if I liked it either. Don't think I would order it, but would drink it if it was sitting in the fridge. Solid beer...I think?
