December 23 - Bell's Christmas Ale

Why we picked it:  It's a Christmas beer and we like Bell's beers...and Katy liked the Christmas tree on the front.

About Bell's Christmas AleThe basic inspiration for Bell's Christmas Ale was to create a sessionable holiday beer, using locally grown malt, which would stand apart from the array of spiced winter warmers that are typically introduced this time of year. In contrast to many other seasonals, Christmas Ale doesn't contain any spices: all of the dry, toasted notes & subtle toffee flavors come from the 100% Michigan-grown barley, custom malted by Briess Malting, while a blend of hops from Michigan & the Pacific Northwest lend earthy, herbal aromas. At 5.5% ABV, it stands as a smooth, highly drinkable beer intended to complement holiday menus, not overshadow them.

ABV: 5.5%

Case Cost: $35

  1. FIRST!! Okay - initially I disliked it, but it tasted better as I went, and by the end I wanted another. One of my favorite ales mostly b/c it has not a hint of freaking fruit in it. That alone makes this my favorite. I have zero bell's christmas ale drinking stories, so I'll leave that up to Bill.

Grade: Forgetting where the bathroom is and peeing in the dryer

  2. I really liked this beer. It went very well with my pasta and I could have had several. I really liked the flavor. After all these Ale's I am converted. Lagers are a thing of the past. Ale's have so much flavor it is unbelievable. I only wish Fran would take off her clothes and wander around with the shades down instead of open (like Katy does) nor have I figured out what to do with our kids too. Where is Grandpa Bill's story?

  3. This is really tasty. Great Christmas pick, I'm glad we chose one of the Bell's. I'd also like to know where Bill's story is for this beer. One more day of beer guys, make it count and post your comments. Except for Anonymous, he can buzz off.

  4. I really liked this. It has a taste that I can't really explain, but after drinking one I want 12 of these. Very, very, very good! I will be going to by a case of these soon. I'll give this a 9 out of 10, strong A

  5. The best of the ales so far. Much more laid-back flavor than most ales, which suits me just fine. Still not a beer that I'd seek out, but one Bell's Christmas Ale followed by fourteen Miller Lites as a chaser would seem like a pretty good way to go.

  6. I'm a big Bell's fan. I don't have any specific stories but I like most of their beers. But this one was pretty sweet. Maybe it didn't help that this is my 7th beer of the night but I'm just not a fan. Another beer that I respect but just don't really like. I'll be up at 6 am to rank my top 23 so far. And then I'll insert the 22 ounce final beer in the list tomorrow. Currently in negotiations over whether or not I get to drink that before or after Christmas Eve mass. Negotiations aren't going well.

  7. This was a good beer. I enjoyed it's full taste and could see myself drinking multiple. Luckily I didn't because then I would not be able send this beer because I'm too drunk

  8. I drank this one day late, but really liked it. Easy to drink, but with a nice flavor and no bitter aftertaste. Bravo on this one. I am a big fan of Bell's.

  9. Surprisingly, I liked this ale. The ale taste was not as strong as others in this case. I would drink this in the future if offered but I would not order on my own.
