Why we picked it: Hoppy dark ale sounds good to us. Plus, its a Utah-based brewery. Always intriguing.
What Uinta has to say: Juniper and piney hops build the framework for this bold dark ale. With its assertive bitterness and sweet malt finish, this beer stands tall above the rest..
ABV: 7.5%
IBU: 85
Fun Fact: Despite it's cutural history (or maybe because of it), there are more than 20 breweries and brew pubs in Utah. You can even design your own Utah brewtrail if you wish.
Alright, full disclosure. I started the day at noon with a pumpkin beer. I then moved through the unholy quaternity of Miller Lite, Bud Light, Coors Light, and PBR. Paired them all with some samosas and way too many desserts. Got home and cleansed the palette with a shot of Celebration Ale. And here we are.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting a pine bomb based on the description. Like Anchor Steam XMAS 2015 pine bomb. Poured super dark. That's a black beer. Took my first sip. I'm getting zero juniper and pine. That's good. But unexpected. Looks like a stout or porter but super light. So just seems like a slightly sweet black lager. Little bit of bitterness on the back end. I'm torn. I had my long diatribe about spruce beers ready to go and now I can't even use it. I can't tell if I like it or not. I think I do. But horribly misleading description. I was expecting to give this 1.2 John Stocktons. Definitely better than 2.7 Rudy Goberts. But not 4.7 Andrei Kirilenkos. I'll give it a 3.2 out of 5.0 Mailmans.
Where is that artistic photo of the quaternity? I was also happy that this one was not as piney (or junipery, whatever that tastes like) as advertised. I could take this or leave it. Wouldn't seek it out, but it wasn't bad. Right down the middle 3.5.
DeleteOops, down the middle would would 2.5. Good thing I don't have to do any math for my job :)
DeleteAnd that I don't have to do any writing, "would would." You'd think I started drinking at noon, too!
DeleteSolid. Pairs well with the bad boy motors gasparilla bowl.
ReplyDeleteLike Bill, this one confused me. I did get some juniper and pine, but felt like it was only every 4th sip or so. Other seemed like I was drinking a porter, and if I went too long between sips it seemed a bit funky at the first taste, but always improved. I'll give it 2.5 Ty Detmers (which is equal to about 2.5 Steve Youngs).
ReplyDeletePerhaps I am I some sort of state where, after a few days off from work, I am currently inhabiting some place in the universe where Holiday cheer meets relaxation and happiness and thus I am just going to be positively inclined towards whatever this evenings offering would be, but I really like this one. Over the past few days, I have gotten to get outside, went to the movies to see Last Jedi, enjoyed lunch with the missus at Facci, watched a Netflix documentary about Jim Carrey playing Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon, and listened to NPRs list of best songs from 2017 - so I will just be straight with you - I am in a super-happy flow state. As a result, nobody, including me, should listen to or rely upon anything I have to say. That disclaimer aside, I really liked how smooth it was and the flavor - sort of reminds me of something that is pleasantly toasty and warm. Also I enjoyed the restrained hoppiness going on. So, I give it 4 #RestrainedHoppinesses, because guess what? That’s a thing now. Cause I just made it one. #RestrainedHoppiness. You’re welcome 24DOBers.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm talking about. The aroma was great - hoppy and enticing. The flavor was really nice too, with the roasted barley notes. My only complaint is that it needed some more maltiness to balance the bitterness. It was almost as good as my favorite black IPA from 21st amendment, but not quite.
ReplyDeleteI think this beer is confused and trying to figure out who it is and what is it's place in the world. Is it a dark beer or an IPA? Or is it some kind of evergreen? Who knows what it is. It wasn't terrible though. I give it 2.5 teenagers, trying to decide who they are and failing.
ReplyDeleteI'm indifferent to this beer. Started out as a 1 out of 5 for the first few sips, but then it grew on me a little. Don't think I'd pay for one again. 2 out of 5 Binders Full of Women.
