Day 2: Monacacy Riot Rye

Why we picked it: Supporting local brews, this is a Frederick brewery and rye beer are nice addition to ensure we have a variety of styles and flavors.

What Monacacy has to say: A ruckus of complex flavor is carried in on the amber glow of torchlight. As tension builds between hop bitterness and the malty tones delivered by locally grown and malted grist, a perfect balance is achieved. The robust texture of rye allies itself with the flavors from specialty malts and hops to rebel against preconceived notions of beer. Unseat the crown. Start a Riot.

ABV: 6.2%

IBU: 70

Fun Fact: Founded in 2011, Moncacy in the old  Ebert’s Ice Cream plant located in historic Downtown Frederick. How have I not been here?

  1. This is a beautiful beer. It has a nice faint aroma, malty fruity sweetness up front, nice biscuity flavor on the back. I love good rye-pa's and this is probably the best one I've had. The rye complexity and spiciness is there and noticeable, but not in your face. I really liked it.

  2. So I warmed up to this by starting with a Labatt’s Blue Ice in suburban Henrietta at 1:30. Followed that up with a couple of strangely tropical winter beers from the Saranac holiday variety pack in Greece. Returned to beautiful Irondequoit to find most of the contents of the hotel fridge to be frozen solid. Luckily the beer was frosty but still in liquid form. So needless to say, the bar was low. Very low.

I have had this before and love it. Very heavy on the rye but I think it works really well. And proof that we didn’t just buy the 24 nutmegiest beers we could find. 4 Bell’s two hearteds!

    2. Labatt’s Blue Light. My bad. Does that make me not fancy enough for Blue?

  3. I guess Ethan and I have different taste buds. I am not a fan of this beer. I find that it has a bitter after taste. It also does not meld well with college football

  4. Yet another MD selection? No love for the Commonwealth south of the Potomac? Nonetheless, this was a fine choice. Seemed much like a session IPA that I usually choose in summertime when I'm poolside and doing my best to ignore the kids. Half a point deduction because the final quarter wasn't quite as pleasing as the first three. 4 out of 5 Aunt Ednas. And can the Badgers please make a comeback in the second half because I'm tired of seeing the Buckeyes represent the Big Ten (and usually fail).

  5. This paired excellently with our first seasonal viewing of Christmas Vacation. 4 cousin Eddie's. A big comeback after last night's, I really enjoyed this one.

  7. Really enjoyed this brew. Definitely seemed like a very rye session-like pale ale. Nice aroma and smooth on the pallet. May be my fav rye beer. 4 happy little elves out 5.

  8. I give this a five. I was debating, because it's a bit early to give anything a five, but I thought being on the schedule early shouldn't count against a beer. Smooth, nice bite, and I like the subtle malt flavor.

Also, the Rye Beer reminded me of rye bread, and how much I like rye bread, and how (no offense, native Marylanders) people south of Philadelphia don't quite seem to understand how important good bread is. Like - it's the most important part of the sandwich (hello!). Next time I am up in Philly (next weekend) I am going to pick up some good rye bread to bring back home to MD. If you want in, let me know - I will get you a loaf. And there's nothing weird about that last sentence. It's all about the context.

    1. This reminds of the time a friend of mine tried to export a Pat's steak back to Texas. He requested that the individual components of a Wiz With be individual wrapped so he could transport it on the plane and assembled appropriately in Dallas. Needless to say, he was denied and I believe asked to never come back to South Philly.

    2. Loaf me (that sounds weird regardless of context)

  9. Just got back from the theater so I barely managed to get this one in before midnight. I agree with everyone here- this is a really great beer.

  10. Quite enjoyed this. Downed this in the middle of a house party at Ross's. Kind of got lost in the evening and couldn't match the 14% craft malt liquor i also tried. But still. Enjoyable beer. 4 jingles.
