The 24th and Final Day: Samuel Smith Winter Welcome

Why we picked it: Traditionally, we go big for Christmas eve, and Samuel Smith fit the bill and truly stands out as a holiday brew. Plus, at 550 ML, you could - in theory - share with relatives... or at least drink enough that they are more tolerable to you.

What Samuel Smith has to say: This seasonal beer is a limited edition brewed for the short days and long nights of winter. The full body resulting from fermentation in ‘stone Yorkshire squares’ and the luxurious malt character, which will appeal to a broad range of drinkers, is balanced against whole-dried Fuggle and Golding hops with nuances and complexities that should be contemplated before an open fire.

ABV: 6%

IBU: 32

Fun Fact:
Traditional methods of brewing have been retained at The Old Brewery.  The Samuel Smith brewery still has its own cooper making and repairing all its oak casks; all Samuel Smith’s naturally conditioned draught beer is handpulled from oak casks. The original well at The Old Brewery, sunk in 1758, is still in use, with the brewing water being drawn from 85 feet underground. If you want to see what it looks like...https://vimeo.com/153806647

  1. A solid traditional winter ale to bring 24DOB to a close. I find the flavors pretty mild on this one with a tinny finish. All and all still OK. I may be in a generous mood because it's the holidays, but I will give it 3 Rudolphs.

  2. Can't believe this is over. Now I need to find a new excuse to drink a beer for the next 341 days. This is another malt bomb. Sweeter than the Breckenridge. Way too sweet. Switching to IPAs after this. Oddly enough it reminds me a lot of my second homebrew, BethESBa, which I was never a big fan of. I only drank all of those since I made it in my kitchen. So that comparison is probably not good for Sam Smith. I give this 1 Too Good at Goodbye and a half Stay with Me (I totally blame my 9 year old for the ability to make those ratings).

Anyway, Merry Holiday Season and a Belated Festivus! Die Hard is on Cinemax at 8 in case anyone was looking for it. I'll post my full rankings on here in the next day or two and make sure to fill out my survey. Everyone should fill out their survey. As you should fill out every survey that you are ever asked to fill out. Especially if someone ever asks you to fill out a Department of Energy survey about your household energy use and characteristics.

  3. I loved this beer - British beer is tough to bottle. It is spectacular in casks with live yeast, but typically loses its freshness in bottles. But this one held up quite well, and had the biscuity malt profile that I was hoping for, plus a little extra spice from the hops. If anyone is reading this that hasn't opened it yet, I highly recommend serving it at ~50 degrees, and get rid of some of the carbonation by swirling it with a spoon. It brings out the flavor that way.

  4. Welp, just got back from the in-laws so I guess I missed the 24th day. Do I save this beer for a year or...?

Nope, it’s open. I’ve already had it a few times this year so no surprises. I like it more than Bill does but I agree a little less sweetness would help.

Happy Christmas & Hanukkah & Saturnalia & New Year & other holiday(s) of your choice. We’ve turned a corner and the days are getting longer. And only 94 days until Opening Day.

  5. Full rankings based on value assigned on that date. Somehow this one ended up last. Although I remember the Ommegang being worse. I fear my scale may have shifted over time. Anyway, great event. Thanks to Scott for bringing back the blog and everyone else for paying me promptly.
