Why We Picked It: One of the forefathers of craft beers, and a regular member of our Xmas tradition. The biggest reason we selected it was the throwback label (see above).
What Sierra Nevada Hill Says About It: Heavy on hops, that was always the brewery plan. So in 1980, we loaded Pale Ale up with Cascade—a new hop at the time named after the mountain range—and the intense aromas of pine and citrus sparked the American craft beer revolution.
ABV: 5.6%
IBU: 38

What Sierra Says About Sierra: Turns out, good beer can do a lot of good. We shook things up in the ’80s, and it helped launch a beer revolution that’s in full force today. We keep pushing boundaries, whether that’s in the brewhouse, with sustainability, or in the great outdoors.
Is it 5 pm yet?
ReplyDeleteNo, but don't let that stop you.
DeleteI like it but rarely pick it up. Thanks for choosing this one. 3/4.
ReplyDeleteI’m gonna say something crazy. This is the best beer we’ve tasted yet. I’d be willing to bet that it’s the best we will taste. There’s a reason it’s perpetually in the top 10 (usually the top 5) of The AHA’s Best Beers rankings.
ReplyDeleteIf I could only have one beer the rest of my life, this would be it. It’s delicious, refreshing, not too bitter, but flavorful and substantial. It just tastes like a great beer.
Side note: remember when we used to talk about how hoppy this and 60 minute smelled?
Old school classic good ol quality beer. No frills, no pretence.
ReplyDeleteThank you little beer elves for the pallet cleanser. I can now trek on to new adventures ahead.
4 of 5 old man's "who cares" opinions.
This is the best beer in the world. Hands down. Alright, a Guinness in Dublin is good, but this is the first good beer I had in my life and I've been drinking it for 27 years and I have no plans of stopping. My only bitterness is that Scott didn't schedule this for my birthday or my anniversary. Both of which have been fueled by many Sierras. 6 out of 5 Aaron Rodgerssessesss!
ReplyDeleteAn old reliable, and of all my early days microbrews, it stands up as well as any (sorry Anchor Steam and Fat Tire). Still, I believe my pallet has shifted over time and its a nice cleanser but nice is the key word. I could have 2-3 more, but still am not drawn to it like I used to be. Still lovely. A solid 3.4 out of 4 Bill's birthday Sierra Nevadas
ReplyDeletesadly i'm missing my Sierra. I'm Sierraless. I know it sounds like a bad condition. Someone who is missing another beer from their 24 probably has my dear Sierra. Fortunately I have had one or two before and I like it. Cant rate it right now though cos it has been a while. I have to wait until I buy one :(
ReplyDeleteI agree with what others have said. Always a classic, the grandfather of craft beer in the US. 4 out of 5
ReplyDeleteAlways great. I don't know why i don't drink this more often.
ReplyDeleteI really like this beer. I have not had it in a long time. Crisp, great flavor, right amount of bitter. Just great. 3.8/4.0. Also, really liked the retro 1980 label on the bottle.
ReplyDeleteQ: Why don’t I get Sierra Nevada more often? (Multiple choice.)
A) Dan, you are a pillar of the community, and you have been a bulwark in support of local breweries such as Black Flag, Hysteria, Oliver, Union, Monument City and Jailbreak, and since they have opened, you have opted out of larger national beers, all to support your community and the dedicated artisans who create some of the best and most inventive beer that you will find anywhere. Thank you, Dan - you are a true hero. #ShopSmall #HoCoBeerRocks #EmbraceResortLiving
B) Dan, when it comes to beer, you have become an insufferable, pedantic bore who yammers on about weird stories and claims of visits to small local breweries with names like “Hunters Mill” and “Blockship” which frankly sound like breweries you just made up. (Admit it!) While everyone knows you used to drink Rolling Rock at Jimmy’s in Anglesea, NJ until years later, at some corporate event, you discovered “Sam Adams,” you now openly mock any beer that people have actually heard of in your relentless pursuit of becoming a fancy man. Stop your nonsense, and just get some Sierra Nevada.
C) Dan, COVID-19 has disrupted the supply chain in a number of critical areas, to include bacon, toilet paper, flour, and sadly, Sierra Nevada. The 24 DOB Organizers were only able to obtain this Sierra Nevada after invoking the Defense Production Act. You are lucky to have this Sierra Nevada, and you should not take it for granted, as soon obtaining even a bottle of this glorious beer will be like trying to get Lysol.
D) Dan, the fact is, the DuClaw rep who handles the KC Liquor Store and Smoke Shop throws in a few sixpacks for the boys in the store if they put the DuClaw at the endcap, and move the Sierra Nevada to more inconspicuous location in the store. Currenty, you can find Sierra Nevada in the KC, in the fourth aisle, at the end, bottom shelf, under a 16 boxes of Franzia White Moscato. The beer business is not for the faint of heart, and if you want to get some old school 1980 retro-labeled Sierra Nevada, well then you’re going to need to get in the game. You got one, use it!
