Day 21 | July 30 | Dogfish Liquid Truth Serum IPA

Why We Picked It: I'm a big fan of Dogfish and their constant experimentation, but haven't had this one that often. Time to fix that.

Note: Just realized I got the numbering wrong, and just updated... sadly, that means we are even closer to the end.

What Dogfish Says About It:  You can handle the truth!

MYTH: IBUs (hop bitterness) can only be achieved in the boil.
TRUTH: Uh-uh!

The truth is, Dogfish Head has been experimenting with tradition-bucking hop schedules since we opened in the mid-90s. From our continual hopping method found in our 60 Minute, 90 Minute and 120 Minute IPAs to our latest innovation, we've been know to zag when everyone else zigs. Liquid Truth Serum is no different, and we've liberated a new truth by adding every single hop to this juicy IPA after the boil is complete.

An unfiltered IPA that's bursting with ALL the hops, Liquid Truth Serum is brewed using a unique process that incorporates four different states of hops: whole leaf, liquefied, pelletized and powdered. The result is a blissfully inefficient IPA full of citrusy and tropical notes, that's truthfully hoppy without being deceptively bitter ... honest.

ABV: 7%

IBU: 65

  1. I wrote a comment. Blog spot lost it, so here is the shorter version.

I read the description and rolled my eyes. Oh great some 7% trash that’s going to have no real favor from dogfish 🙄. I poured it into a glass and it poured a hazy golden color that peaked my interest. I smelled it and it had a very fresh hop smell, pretty unique to be honest.

The first taste was very orange like followed by a nice hop bitterness. It had a slight after burn of any 7% beer. Not a beer I would seek out or buy, but one I’m had I tried. It held up to its “we are great and unique” description.

    3.8 out of 5 fishpuptails.

  2. Had this a few times but it had been a while. Was at Rehoboth a few weeks ago and kept buying this, but my brother-in-law drank them all. He'd give it 5 stars. Anyway, I do like this. Good proper IPA. Definitely more on the "danky" side than the "citrus" side. My can was all dented but that didn't seem to affect the taste. Pairs well with the Beths streaming concert. I have now moved on to the Silver Branch Cosmic Spring which is actually in the same family I think. Going to be a solid evening! 4 out of 5 Royal Treat mint chocolate chip cones.

  3. You had me at 65%.
Did I mention I like bitter beers?
So I just realized I'm a snob. I have always poo-poo'd dogfish head but I have never disliked their beer. This is a perfect example of a well balanced tasty, completely non-descript, generic beer.
Once again, something I can enjoy yet totally forget about.
Because of that, I give it 2.5 of 5 what?

  4. I risked my life and drove to Delaware to drink this beer. I mean - you know how the Guinness tastes better in Ireland(?) - I thought the same may hold here. So, first - you’re welcome. Now that we have that out of the way, The beer - nice aroma - smooth. But. I usually like hoppy beers, but I felt like this was maybe too hoppy. “Deceptively hoppy,” per the can, but I detected no deceit. This was like walking around the corner and walking into an unmasked 6 foot hop. Or getting beat about the head with a hop stick. Or, jumping into a big rubber ball pit, but the rubber balls have been replaced with hops. Or, Hops R Us. Well, speaking of beating things with a stick, I give this 2.85/4.00 du Ponts, including bonus Delaware points.

    1. I would love a hops ball pit. That could be at my next birthday party.

  5. very interesting beer. Saw it on the shelf at The Dogfish in Rehoboth 3 weeks ago. I was more than curious, but chose others in preference as I normally would given the 7%. But thanks to our great 24dob hosts for including this so we could try it. I liked it. Lots of flavors but not in an unbalanced way like other 24dobs: does anyone remember that strange rainbow fish brewery from the pacific northwest from a couple of winters ago - such an oddball and it definitely ended up in my fish batter. This on the other hand is complex with balance, and more flavor came in later as the glass warmed up. Definitely one I'll choose to have again. 4/5

  6. I really like Dogfish's approach to beer, but they really can be over the top and a bit absurd. Also, Sam Calagione seems like such a frat boy , but I love his passion... that being said, this one walked the line nicely between experimental and flavorful, but still drinkable. It was a wonderful balance between hoppy - in flavor and aroma - without being excessively bitter and overpoweringly boozy. I will likely add this more to my rotation. 3.56 out of 4.

    1. I have learned 2 things from this whole thing.
1- Beer “types” mean officially nothing. They are all made up and have no correlation or rules. I see why wines have such picky naming for the official regions and classifications.
2- Dan (who I don’t know) and I seem to have pretty similar types of beer.

  7. This is a great beer. I like it better than 60 minute IPA which is their benchmark for a standard IPA I think. Excellent aroma and flavor and just enough bitterness to make me wanting to come back for more
