Day 6 | July 15 | Mully's Brewery Galaxy Queen

Why We Picked It: Bill was excited to see a beer from Mully's. I never heard of it. That a perfect 24DOB selection.

What Mully's Say About It: Not a damn thing on its website, but Untapped says "Double dry hopped Blonde, brewed with flaked oats and wheat."

ABV: 6.5%
IBU: 25

  1. Hey, my can is smaller than the one in the pic.
I like it even though it's very contradictory.
It drinks like an IPA, dank and citrusy. It passes as a blonde in appearance. It smells worse then it tastes. But take away all the labels and it's very enjoyable.

On a different note, I'm drinking this with UTZ kettle classics, Chesapeake Bay Crab Chips. I am not impressed, I would have thought they'd nail it.
For those in the know, Sliders makes better home made old Bay chips.
Please share your favorite crap chip brand.

    1. Yes on Sliders, but you knew that I thought that.

Honestly, I have no chip loyalties, but have come to like the baked chips. Oh, and Cheetos... but that's barely food.

    2. Oh man. I miss Sliders. :(

My favorite chips are the extra large bag of kettle brand ruffle cut salt and pepper chips from Costco.

I agree the old bay chips are never as good as I hope. If you like hot Cheetos the old bay cheese curls are a little better. But still not great.

    3. OK, Theodore is in charge of 24 Days of Chips.

    4. I thought I was in charge of chips! That might be more my area than beer. Utz crap chips by the way.

  2. This beer was fine. We drank it tonight with some home made chicken cilantro wonton soup. Was honestly not a great pairing.

The beer itself did not really blow me away and I don’t have too many thoughts about it. It was fine 🤷‍♂️, I will probably forget about it. 3.6 out of 5 mehs.

  3. If this is what blondes tasted like, then I would love blondes. Definitely more of an IPA then a blondes to me. I'm sure it's the double dry hopping, which I have become a fan of and consistently adds flavor and complexity to any beer. I will definitely add this to my rotation 3.5 out of 4 Rocket Racoons.

    1. I am starting to have a lot of self doubt .... do I know what blondes taste like? Why do I think they are sweet? What makes these blondes? Do I not understand beer? What’s the meaning of life? What’s the point of life?

  4. Pretty good beer. The description really got my hopes up, not all were met, but still quite enjoyable. The aroma was fairly faint, which is appropriate for the style. I think it was quite refreshing but tasted more like a session IPA. Actually it had the taste more like a hazy IPA which I don't prefer, but it was subtle enough for me to not complain. I'd drink it again.

  5. I had very high hopes after Mully's clearly beat out Mobtown in my personal All Together challenge. This I did not like. I admit, ounce number 12 was better than once number 1, but something just seems off. Is it the galaxy hops? The wheat? The oats? I'm not sure. Ro says it tastes like sweet melon. Fear not, I finished it quite rapidly, but I will not be seeking it out again. Once you marry an Italian, I think you are just destined to not like blondes. I give it it 3 out of 4, I mean 5 non-blondes.

  6. Really liked this. More like the IPAs from where I come from. Nice balance and some subtle nutty flavor. Very enjoyable from my POV. Aside from having a smaller can from the above picture [!!], as Theodore notes, the label states 5.5% not 6.5%. Scott: did you put a Mullys label on an IPA for a laugh?

  7. I thought this beer was just okay. I suspect the Galaxy hops were working against it. I say this because the latest Silver Branch beer, Urban Migration, features Galaxy hops as well, but uses them to greater effect. The tastes and overtones are similar, but they play out better within the full New England IPA matrix than in this double dry-hopped blonde presentation.

  8. I thought this was an IPA when I first started drinking it and was surprised to see it was a blonde. So is it a blonde? I'm not sure but if it is, it is the best blonde I have had. 3.75 out of 5.

  9. I agree with the "this tastes like an IPA" comments. However, i did enjoy this beer and would happily sip some more.

  10. This is pretty damn good. Especially after the prior two days. Great aroma, someone actually took the time to filter it or at least let it hang out for a few days in secondary fermentation. Good flavor, average bitterness. It's not out of this world, but I'd certainly drink it again. I'll give this a 3.5 out of 5.

  11. Fellow DOBers! Sorry for my lapse; I was on the road, visiting family, and staying in one of the finest suite hotels that Mt. Laurel, NJ has to offer. Interesting place. The hotel was bustling with a NY based travel baseball team with all of the baseball moms dutifully wearing their glitter face masks around the bottom of their chins, and all of the dads with Mets shirts. (Upside: Another reason to hate the Mets.) Travel note: I am really glad that I didn't see the part of the hotel that looked like it had caught fire on two floors until AFTER checkout. I am sure they will fix that up soon.) I prepared well for my travels, however, and brought some DOB selections to enjoy.

And speaking of enjoyment - THIS beer. Some blonde beers are a bit too light and watery for my taste, but I thought this one was really terrific. I liked that it was hoppy without betraying its "blonde roots" and stayed true to its golden/blonde concept (that's right - BEERS have CONCEPTS [no joke!]), and did not cross over into a full blown IPA. 3.75/4.00 for me.
