Why We Picked It: We often enjoy Troeg's Mad Elf as part of the holiday festivities, and didn't want to leave them out of the summer edition, especially with the summer only IPA. Also, they can be considered localish.
What Troegs Says About It: In the hop fields we daydream and study, and at the brewery we tinker and test. For Field Study, dry-hopping delivers notes of ripe grapefruit, mango, pear and melon. Add a backbone of local rustic pale malt, and Field Study is just what we were after: a slightly hazy yet bright summer daydream come true.
We taste: ripe grapefruit, pear, hint of melon
ABV: 6.2%

More from Troegs About Field Study:
Friday at 7:30! Where the hell is everyone? I swore I had this beer before but apparently not. I blame it on all Troegs labels looking the same. Can get ugly when you accidentally have a Mad Elf thinking you are having a Sunshine Pilsner. Anyway, this was a blast of citrusy hops. Grapefruit specifically in my not so learned opinion. I like it. Right now I wish I hadn't sworn to only use half stars. I'll round down to 3.5 out of 5 Cadbury Eggs.
ReplyDeleteI’ll keep this shortish again. I think this beer suffered from a rainy day. I was in the mood for a solid bitter hopped up IPA. This was just a little to citrus forward for me. Maybe if it was on one of the 100 degrees days I would feel different. But on a sad, rainy, last day at the beach. 3 out of 5 can I stay at the beaches?
ReplyDeleteI didn't think I had tried this before, but according to untappd I have.
ReplyDeleteSo there you go, unmemorable.
I'm not sure if it's the "situation", but I found this "faint" in flavor. Not a bad flavor, just not powerful enough.
I'm not offended by this beer, just won't go looking for it.
2.15 of 5 what are we talking about?
If only this beer was as good as the virtual tasting video! I actually thought I had this a while ago, and that I liked it, but according to the video it sounds like it is pretty new(?), so maybe I did not have it before. It got me to thinking about Hershey’s chocolate. When I was a kid, I loved it. And now, I think it is just so-so. It was like they changed something in the recipe. AND here’s the thing - they DID change the recipe. (You can look it up - many, many people are saying that Hershey’s changed the recipe.). So, I am wondering if Troegs changed the recipe? Could it be? Where is this paranoid review going? I DON’T KNOW. All this to say, I thought I was really going to like this, and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. Maybe that is just what it means to be an adult. (Is this getting too dark - well, that’s what a rainy day at the beach will get you.) So, 2.75/4.00, even though I want to give it more points b/c of the video.
ReplyDeleteUgh. New phone is driving me crazy! So, I will keep this short. I feel like this is a session IPA before they start calling every light IPA a session. This is citrusy and clean, but I am still confused how an IPA has 0 IBUs. 3.45 out of 4.
ReplyDeleteHi, I am sorry I have been incommunicado. My wife and I have been a day behind now for a while, and I have been hesitant to comment on beers after everyone's attention has moved on. But I feel compelled to call this one out -- I really liked it a lot. I agree with the gist of the comments above calling into question the IPA bona fides, but so what? Even if it is more like a hoppy pale ale or whatever, I really enjoyed this immensely. So crisp and refreshing, and I love the hoppy, citrusy flavors. I will definitely be seeking more of these. And since I have the benefit of hindsight here, I can already avow that I prefer this one to the other Troegs beer from Day 23. I haven't had the Avery yet, but this is currently in the running for my favorite of the crop along with the B'more Active and the perennial favorite Sierra Nevada.
