Day 5 | July 14 | Black Flag Brewing Z Morris

Why We Picked It: My favorite Columbia brewery and a Save By The Bell reference. Yes, sir!

What Black Flag Say About It: "Easy drinking lightly hopped ale utilizing all centennial hops. A Bayside favorite."

ABV: 4.9%
IBU: 20

Fun Facts: Zack Morris is a selfish punk. He's not your friend or anyone's friends at Bayside High. Zach Morris is trash

  1. I've had this one before. It's not the best example of a blonde Ale, but it's more in my taste range.
Trivial comment: the graphics are horrendous. Is it an attempt to look 80s? Even so, not a good one.
As for the content. Drinking from the can, so don't know what color it is. I presume sightly cloudy golden? It's a straight forward attempt at a blonde Ale and it works for a daily drinker. In this case though, I'm going the other way then with the wheel wobble and say it's too plan Jane. I'd drink it any day, bit wouldn't seek it out.

    1. Z Morris is Zach Morris from Saved by the bell an early 90’s tv show that had those very crappy late 80s early 90s graphics in the intro.

(Signing voice) “it’s alright because I’m saved by..its alright because I’m save by..its alright because I’m saved by the bellll”

  2. I am not sure how this is a blonde ale. The head that was gone in 10 seconds, left a super light lacing, the light clear color, the corn forward flavor. This is an american adjunct lager (maybe the very slight sweetness makes it a blonde? I fell like this is a brunette who dies her hair blonde). It reminds me a lot of the “real original” Coors you can get at the factory in Golden before they added all the preserves and crap to make it shippable throughout the country, Smokey and the Bandit style Coors.

I like it a lot and if I was looking for a nice solid classic American beer, this is what I would go for. A perfect fishing beer. I will bring some next time I fish for sure.

4.6 out of 5 Burt Reynolds mustaches. (This is the first beer so far I will probably keep stocked in more normal fridge rotation).

A side story about the Coors brewery many-many years ago with my dad. We were going through the normal tour like everyone does. They talk non-stop about the “special water”’ they brew Coors with. At some point the guide talks about how they started to make Coors in England and they ship over all the ingredients so it’s exactly the same. Obviously my hand goes right up, as I have a question.

Me: “Excuse me do they ship over the water”
    Guide: What do you mean?
“You said the water is what makes Coors what it is. If you don’t ship the water then it’s not the same”
Well we ship the other ingredients
“Well either the water does not matter and that’s a lie or it’s not real Coors and that’s a lie”

....followed by an awkward silence. Finally the guide says “I would appreciate no more questions” and we went to finish the tour. Maybe I went too hard, but things like that bother me. Sorry random tour guide.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your tour story. It is awesome. I am similarly bothered by two or more rapidly occurring statements with contradictory underlying logic, but I don't often speak about them... at least not in front of strangers. Kudos to you!

  3. It's the power of Saved by the Bell that a blonde ale that comes in with sky-high expectations actually meets and exceeds them. I loved this. I agree, I'm not really sure it's a blonde ale. But then again, I'm not exactly what a blonde ale is officially. This was just a nice, smooth, easy-drinking beer to enjoy with the 39% humidity in July. I'll take it! I give it a solid 4 out of 5 Kelly Kapowskis.

  4. I thought this was a good middle of the road blonde ale. Not too special, but very drinkable. I'd prefer just a bit more hop aroma and a little more maltiness, but solid overall and perfect for summer. You don't need fruit to have a refreshing summer ale.

  5. As I said in yesterday's post, I have had this beer before, and I enjoyed it then, just as I did this evening. It doesn't stand out so much in any unique way, I just find it light and eminently quaffable. Actually, I did detect a slightly odd aftertaste though, maybe almost like an oatmeal or oat-ish overtone (?) I say "odd," but it wasn't really detracting.

  6. I'm not a fan of blondes. In a choice between a blonde and a session, I would probably pick session. This beer made me thing blondes have some hope though. 3.5 out of 5. Extra .25 for dixie cup look and Saved by the Bell reference.

  7. A day late on this, but actually drank it at the beach yesterday. Like others, I am not much for blonde ales, but this is better than most (maybe because its not a really a blonde?). Nice balance and pretty decent flavor for a warm day. Like others, extra points for the Save By the Bell reference. Note to other Bayside fans: Black Flag also sells an amber named K Kapowski.

    1. I actually really like the K Kapowski, although it suits me more as an autumnal, October-festy beer. Had a Crowler of it delivered a few weeks ago, and it was really smooth. I recommend, although better in the fall. I think "K" is one of their standard beers that they always keep on tap.

  8. not great aroma - reminiscent of quick setting epoxy glue. Got used to it though, and it wasnt that bad overrall. Had better blondes [fnar, fnar!!]*. I'm sure anyone who has never sniffed glue might find it more off putting than I did. But I had no problem finishing it. 9. ps adam: Coors is indeed on tap in my local british pub in Manchester. I was amazed to first learn this a few years ago on a home trip. Given there were so many great ales on tap next to it I admit I just wasn't quite curious enough to try it

  10. I just don't get Black Flag. Other people like them, but I don't know that I've ever had a beer of theirs that I want to have a second time.

This is miles better than the poison from yesterday. Zac Morris was sort of a self-interested, garbage person. Maybe this is some kind of performance art in fermented form?

  11. I want to like this one more. But, I just don't. Positive things I can say about it: (1) I like the can and SBTB reference, (2) it is better than Budweiser, (3) it is easy to drink, and you can drink it fast to get to you next beer.

    1.90/4.00 Beldings for me.
