Day 22: Spoetzel Brewery Shiner Holiday Cheer

Why We Picked It: Another holiday brew from a known independent.

What Spoetzel Says About It: "Holiday traditions come in all shapes and sizes. Shiner’s comes in freshly wrapped bottles. This old-world dunkelweizen is brewed with Texas peaches and roasted pecans – perfect for cracking open in front of a crackling fire."

ABV: 5.4%

 IBU: 22

Fun Facts: Shiner offers its own holiday playlist on its website to accompany this beer.  And you can find it on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7aWJ1YUsa89hX5wdsJaw1W

As an Austin-based brewery, it has both kinds of music: Country and Western. Most importantly, it includes the lovely holiday classic, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."

  1. Ah, Shiner!!!
Brings back great memories. When I moved to Austin in '94, I quickly discovered Shiner Bock. I believe at that time, you could only get it in TX. But it quickly became THE beer of choice. Nights out bar hopping at the Continental Club, Antone's, black cat & Deep Eddie. Eating TexMex or BBQ at Stubb's, Ironworks and Rudy's or out camping, in the parks or on the lake. Shiner was there with me. When I met my Maryland born wife in Austin, we got hammered on Shiner. It was a great time in my life. Found memories.
We'll, many, MANY years have passed and Spoetzl is no longer the little brewery in Shiner TX anymore. Shep states it's an independent, not sure that's true, but it doesn't matter, it's stayed true.
No this particular one is interesting. Is that banana I taste? Not what I'd expected by the label. It's more fruity then spicy and that works well with me. I like this one. It's flavorful but not too sweet. It's a reasonable ABV that makes a second one possible. Overall, I give it 3.5 "all y'alls"

  2. While owned by a different, slightly larger local brewery, they view themselves as independent:https ://m.sacurrent.com/Flavor/archives/2019/11/07/shiner-brewery-claps-back-at-corporate-beer-brand-that-bought-billboards-in-its-hometown

  3. It's kind of like a fruit cake of beer, but not in a bad way. Or at least not a horrible way.

Overall, this is fine beer that was very refreshing and smooth. Obviously, it was sweet, but never overwhelmed and generally had a nice finish. Ultimately, I'd give 2.75 out of 4 Austin City Limits.

  4. Since time began
    Every single hour
    That we have known
    And from each moment
    All that is left
    Sleep of the innocent
    Just one desire
    Shiner like it does

  5. So once again I decided not to bias myself by reading the description or the comments. I took a whiff and thought, "my that seems fruity." Took a sip and was like, "what the hell is that?" I briefly thought "Strawberries?" And then it hit me. Peaches! Fucking Peaches! So many damn peaches! Read the label and am still trying to find the pecans. I think all the pecans do is make the peaches seem sweeter. This reminds me of a fateful 24daysofbeer incident from 7 long years ago:

That is one solid comment thread there. Anyway, this is better than that. I honestly feel like there is a good beer lurking below the surface. Unfortunately the surface is coated in 5 feet of peaches so we'll never know. 1 out of 5 Ty Cobbs.
