Why We Picked It: A limited release from a local brewery.
What Flying Dog Says About It: "Brewed as a tribute to our fallen friend, Gerald "G" Bigelow. Our Flying Dog family has decided to pay tribute to our fallen friend the best way we know how: By brewing a beer that’s almost as amazing as he was. Ain’t Nothing But A G Thing has a juicy-fruity yeast strain that G himself had been experimenting with in his own homebrewing escapades. The end result is a deliciously-tropical, hazy pale ale that reminds us of a mystery Dum Dum sucker."
ABV: 5.4%
IBU: 25
Facts: Per Flying Dog: "Flying Dog lost a huge piece of its collective heart last month with the unexpected passing of Gerald “G" Bigelow.
G was so much more than a coworker. He always laughed at our jokes, and he spent hours of his free time patiently teaching a rowdy, inebriated bunch of mutts how to play D&D. He was our friend, our brother, and our Dungeon Master, and we miss him more than any words written here can convey."
Ro got home early and insisted we start happy hour early. Seemed appropriate. Although I would prefer to do it with a better beer. Reading an obituary as part of the naming of the beer may not have helped. But I am not getting much haze here. And I like my haze. This seems really carbonated and a bit bitter. Almost like one of those Brut IPA abominations that have appeared in recent years. It's not terrible but glad I only have one half. I give it one Andre Young and one Calvin Broadus out of five Eric Wright, O'Shea Jackson, Kim Nazel, Antoine Carraby, and Lorenzo Pattersons.
ReplyDeleteWas excited to get home today to try the next installment in my 24 day beer adventure.
ReplyDeletePale ale's are within my preferred taste circle. Flying Dog, not so much, so once again, beer mimics life and all its Glory.
Bill: I agree, the carbonation hits hard right out of the gate and set me back on my heels. I will disagree about the flavor though. Once past the carb, it's actually pretty tasty.
Definitely overstated on the "hazy" part. Do I sense a hint of Weiss flavor?
Overall, middle of the road. In a cooler full of Yuenglings, Rolling rocks & Boston lagers, I'd pick this one.
Tomorrow is another day.
I am a Flying Dog fan so happy to see two unfamiliar FD beers made the cut. I am a fan of the haziness but there is a lot of carbonation here as I have burped about 8 times since making it halfway. It is 3.75 out of 5 good but still giving a slight edge to Tipping Point from yesterday for favorite beer so far. The carbonation would make this a nightmare in a beer mile so 2.75/5 on the Beer Mile Chugability.
ReplyDeleteThey had me intrigued with "mystery Dum Dum sucker," so I eagerly cracked this open despite being let down by Flying Dog in past years (see 2017...salted caramel, Otterbein's cookies..) Nope, they didn't redeem themselves for me. I agree with Bill about the bitterness, that's what ruined it for me, it just didn't belong. Sorry G.
ReplyDeleteSo, I really like this beer. I think it's a real treat, and it's unlike others I've had before. Come to think of it, I can't remember having had a hazy pale ale before--sure, many hazy IPAs, but not just hazy "PA." And I agree it's not so heavy on the "hazy" part, but it's not haze-less either. I love the flavors going on here, and I actually like the bitterness others have mentioned. It's working for me, and I will definitely seek out more sixers of this one before its limited edition status makes it impossible to get. Thanks for including it and introducing it to me!
ReplyDeleteLike others, I could never quite works past the over carbonation. Tempted to put some Mentos in it to see what would happen.
ReplyDeleteThere was a touch of the haziness going on, but I also got left me with a very dry finish. Almost reminded me of drinking champagne but with less sweetness. Glad I had it once, but would really not do this again.
Compton and Long Beach together
ReplyDeleteNow you know you're in trouble
Ain't nothing but a G thank, baby!
Drank it earlier in the evening. I get that it was a tad fizzy. But I liked it, probably because I didn't have any expectations in that I wasn't expecting it to be a Pale Ale, and IPA or a Hazy version of either. The 24DOB is 'like a box of chocolates ... etc'. But it was much later in the evening when I got curious and checked out Gerald - and his obituary. Poor guy died young and with a young family. really good that Flying Dog should dedicate this to him. Every credit
ReplyDeleteVery nice beer. Way more crisp than the typical hazy pale ale. I'd say this would be a perfect summer beer, but I'd drink it any time of year. The aftertaste is just bitter enough and the fruit flavors are subtle and refreshing.
