Day 3: Hysteria Brewing Tipping Point

Why We Picked It: A brewery minutes from my home in Columbia that makes some delicious beverages. I heard a rumor the brewmaster left and it's going downhill... just in case that is true, we wanted to get it while it is good.

What Hysteria Says About It: "Our sunshine in a glass pale wheat ale, brewed with Citra, SImcoe, and Amarillo. It's so hot right now. Light bodied, hazy, and easy drinking. Soft mouthfeel, citrusy lemon, with subtle notes of pineapple and grapefruit zest. Drinky, drinky, and don't forget the pinky! "

ABV:
 5.6%

IBU:
30

Fun Facts:
The taproom hidden in the business parks of Columbia is a fun night out, as I can attest from our retirmement party for 24DOB drinker Jason D. In addition to hosting bands most Fridays and Saturdays, the jumbo sized beer pong is blast. Also, for bar crawlers, its minutes from local brewery Black Flag and not far from Frisco Taphouse.

Note: Due to popular demand (Bill complaining), we have expanded the rating system scale to include  half points. Please rate it based on the appropriate level of beer-loving statisticians.

  1. Shep, nice job on the voting scale upgrade!!!!

I like this one. It's flavorful with hints of citrus and a tasteful, lingering aftertaste. As someone who prefers lower ABV's (mostly so I can drink longer) this is a good one to stock up on.
I am surprised the IBU is so low, it seems more bitter than declared. As one who likes bitter, that's an added plus.
I hope the rumor isn't true, or better yet, they replace their brewer with a better one who'll improve on this one.

    1. P.S. I redirect my kudos for the voting scale to Bill. I should have read the opener. Credit should only go to the brilliant minds with great ideas, not the lackeys that implemented the idea.

  2. Delicious. Lots of good flavor without the overpowering bitterness and headache that comes with an IPA.

  3. Ro seems to love this so maybe it's a beer more for Women. To me the sweetness up front hit like a Rocket. Then it attacked like some thick hop Animal. It's bringing me to my knees and at this point I'd prefer to Pour Some Sugar on Me. Whatever they were going for here Armanotgedden It. Two out of Four shirtless Phil Collens (that's an e, not an i). And Phil Collen shirtless circa 2015.

  4. I’m usually a wheat beer skeptic but this one is better than most. A little hoppier maybe? On Untapped Andrew said it was sort of like a hazy IPA and I agree.

  5. Regarding the rating, half steps are a nice improvement, but keep in mind there is still no zero stars rating, which makes 2.5 the midpoint. Is it possible/easy to have a scale that goes from 0 to 1 and lets everyone enter what decimal rating he or she likes, to whatever precision? No one ever seems to agree with me that that is a good idea, so I won’t be surprised that no one here agrees. Sigh

Regarding the beer, my wife (Ashley) and I agree that it is “meh.” It’s the taster that you don’t complain about, yet try to position in the weakest leg of the beer relay. Definitely not lead off, definitely not anchor.

  6. Best wheat ale I've ever had. Possibly the only one. Anyway best wheat beer ever. Shep you need to find the story of this legendary brewmaster and see where he's brewing now.

  7. This one went down well and quickly, so I must have enjoyed it. I got the wheatiness of it and found it a bit sweet, but not nearly as overwhelming as Bill found. Apparently that can trigger Def Leppard wordplay.

All in all, a solid beer and my favorite so far. 2.5 out of 4 hair bands.

Side note: If you hit the vote button without entering a rating, it actually logs it as zero... so there's that.

  8. If this were a blind taste test, I would not have identified this as a wheat ale. Without being able to see the liquid, I thought it was a hazy ipa. 3.75 out of 5 for me. It is definitely drinkable so 4 out of 5 for Beer Mile Chugability.

  9. Now this one has some pop! I like it very much. I, too, think it seems more IPA than wheat ale or whatever it is supposed to be, but I won't hold that against it. I really like the environment at Hysteria, and think they have tried some interesting brews, but I have always thought that a lot of their beers have this weird aftertaste common. BUT, I am happy to report that I don't find that to be the case with this one. Smooth, nice hoppy taste. This may be my favorite Hysteria Beer ever.

    3.5 weird aftertastes.

  11. This beer was good quality and seems to fit they taste for what all the fancy kids are trying to do with hazy IPAs. I just don't like the style, so it wasn't my favorite. The aroma was great, but too many weird flavors for me. The description was spot on. I think it's the grapefruit tones that don't settle with me.

  12. I love Hysteria. This one though accidentally tipped over the rug in my basement before I had chance to finish it the glass. [Pun intended - but true.] I wont lose any sleep about that. I had enough all ready. I'm not sure how to score: used to the old 0-5 system; now we have 1-4. So maybe 2.5? I have great trust that there will be a great resurgence at Hysteria, and that the loss of their main Brewmaster is behind them - because they have great staff.
