Day 2: Uinta Farmside Saison
Why We Chose It: Uinta has regularly produced quality beers, and we wanted to include a new saison to the 24DOB. Plus, a brewery based in Utah is still intriguing to me on various levels.
What Uinta Says About It: Boasting funk & fruit notes from white wine must and gooseberries, this earthy saison is approachable yet complex.
ABV: 5.6%
IBU: 7
Glass Recommendation: Sifter
Fun Facts: The brewery is actually named after the Uinta Mountains in Utah, and it is pronounced you-in-tuh. I 2012, it buys and demolishes a church south of the brewery to build a packaging facility. According to Uinta: "Considering Benedictine Monks were the first people to brew beer, we think they'd be okay with it." It is now 38th largest craft brewery in the Nation and is solid in 35 states

Not a fan of this one. A little too sour and funky. But better than nothing as we begin decorating the tree. So...many...ornaments...
ReplyDeleteI got a mouthful of foam on this one the first swig. I'm not a saison fan either. Combining saison and fruit did not make me want it more either. Sorry Uinta but they make much better stuff. 2 out of 5.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Utah...They’re playing Northwestern! In the Holiday Bowl! That’s worth an extra half point for today’s selection. I had a really bad saison/farmhouse ale at a local Downingtown PA brewery last week but this made me completely forget about that experience. Very crisp, smooth, fruity, and floral beer. 4.5 out 5 Alex Smiths.
ReplyDeleteFar more references to Northwestern football than I was expecting this year. If we can tie tomorrow chocolate peanut butter stout to it, I will be impressed.
Delete.. And now I'm watching NW alum Justin Jackson running all over the Steelers. What in the names of Stephen Colbert, Michael Wilbon and Bill McNary is going on!
DeleteNU folks. NU. Northwestern is one word.
DeleteUgh. NU pretentiousness. It's not Ivy League or "THE Ohio State" annoying, but still... I'm just excited if people actually know the difference between Buffalo State and the University of Buffalo (although sometimes I take credit for the latter's sport success, just because its nice to feel like a DI big shot)
DeleteI didn't realize when we got this that I had drunk it before. I somehow gave it 1.5 stars in April 2016 and commented that it tasted like bad white wine. That seems a little harsh. It's a pretty decent saison with some definite strong white wine aftertaste. Maybe it's because Ro had me drinking the Dogfish Mixed Media all summer, but I think I've gotten more tolerant of some wine in my beer. Still not my favorite. I give it 3 of 5 Parley Pratts.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this brew midday with fellow 24DOBer Sam while watching Giants-Bears and comparing fantasy football notes. After containing Sam's foaming brew in a frosty mug, I enjoyed a refreshing, crisp saison. Compared to the company description, I found it more "approachable" than complex. Definitely some notes of fruitiness, but didn't find it all interesting. It does pair well with fantasy football analysis, which is a plus. I give it 3 out of 5 Pat Mahomeses.
ReplyDeleteI like it! I didn't expect to. I am generally not a huge fan of Saison or Sours (although - that is beginning to change). For some reason, despite being refrigerated and not juggled or tossed or rolled down a steep hill immediately before opening, this one was super foamy right upon opening. In an unusual exercise of patience, I waited for the foam to dissipate. And then, found it really enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to explain why I like it. The best I can do: Saison, but not too much. Sour-ish, but not too much. Something different; but not so much. Not breaking records, but sorta just right. That's the beehive state for you.
3.5/5.0 for me. Cheers!
It's good to be back.
Lots of foaminess going around with this batch.
DeleteNot into this. Tastes like sprite. No expert on saisons but I don't think sprite is usually part of the routine.
ReplyDeleteTo be fair I refrigerated it then transported it an hour in a car then re-refrigerated it. May have some some damage.
I'm not big on sours nor overly citrous as flavors often fall off quickly. On first sips I thought it was Ok. But later I started to enjoy it more. It pleasantly surprised me ... 3.5
ReplyDeleteSo. Much. Head. Decent but didn't really strike me as a saison, farmhouse ale, or a combination of the two taste wise. I was just at Sovereign a few days ago having some Hill Farmstead and Tired Hands examples of the style so maybe that is tainting my thoughts on this one a bit.
ReplyDeleteThis was a nice, refreshing beer. Their description was spot on. It's normally not a style that I would seek out, but I liked it. It was a bit fizzy, but I would give it a 3.5.
