Day 9: Left Hand Death Before Disco

Why We Picked It: Did you see the name? Also, as before, we like Left Hand and this allows us two compare two different porters from the same brewery. The other was the controversial Pixan.

What Left Hand Says About It: Roasted malts create a full-bodied classic with rich chocolate malt and dark berry notes.

ABV: 6%
IBU: 24 IBU
Malt: Pale 2-row, row, Munich, Crystal, Chocolate, Carafa

Fun Facts: Disco Demolition Night was an ill-fated baseball promotion on July 12, 1979 at Comiskey Park in ChicagoIllinois. At the climax of the event, a crate filled with discorecords was blown up on the field between games of the twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Many of those in attendance had come to see the explosion rather than the games and rushed onto the field after the detonation. The playing field was so damaged by the explosion and by the fans that the White Sox were required to forfeit the second game to the Tigers. ( OK, not directly about this beer, but a fun fact nonetheless.)

  1. I've been on a porter and stout kick for the last 18 hours. Possibly due to the cold weather. So I had high hopes. This did not meet them. I like my porters rich and roasty. This is not that. Very watery. I mean, perhaps I am biased due to an afternoon of 12% ABV imperial stouts, but this is pretty weak. Nothing offensive, but just bland and generic. I give it 2 out of 5 Kristen Schaal's.

  2. Bill and I were at the same establishment enjoying mostly high ABV stouts. I also had a brown ale aged in whiskey barrels that came in around 13.9%. Like Bill said, it does not quite hold up to the others. It decent but nothing to write home about. 3.25 out of 5.

  3. Now this is the kind of porter I can sit next to a nice fire with and enjoy many of them. It is very tasty, I like the roasted flavors a lot, and there's no vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter, oatmeal, bourbon, milk, or whatever else to get in the way of a nice beer flavored beer. Just a really nice, solid porter. Sometimes I like them a little creamier, or a little stronger, but then again, if I want something stronger, I'll go for a stout. I give it a 4.5 because its a darn good beer. And you shouldn't have to chew it just because it's dark.

  4. Hit the nail on the head Ethan. Solid porter without all that pb&j or Nutella flavoring that often gets in the way. 4.5 Barry Gibbs

  5. Not to just parrot the others, but this is truly just a very good solid porter. I only got hints of chocolate, which is fine by me. Mostly just a rich flavorful porter that doesn't overwhelm and even leaves you craving more. I give it 4 out of 5 Disco Stus.

  6. Cant believe its even from the same people as that pixie/troll bollocks. I take back what I said about them using only their left hands. Solid, balanced, no offputting silly superfluous flavor spikes that distract. No complaints. 4 from me

  7. I believe there is good disco and bad disco. I submit to you, that "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire is an example of good disco. (I will tell you, I struggled with considering it disco at all, but Spotify classifies it as such on a disco playlist, so not sure if there is really a more authoritative source than that.) Perhaps it's the horns, or because for the longest time they were one of the biggest bands from my city of birth (Philadelphia), or because they always came back to play the Parkway at the 4th of July, but I dig the tune. (If you don't know it, check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUle4dv6nio.)

So, along these lines, I believe there is good porter and bad porter. I often put porters in the latter category - porters that seem composed of tar and laden with lots of alcohol-iness and spoonfuls of peanut butter, coffee grounds, toffee and motor oil. Not my thing. I am pleased to report, however, that I would put this in the category of "good porter." Smooth, interesting, malty and rich taste, but smooth, and not incorporating anything stupid like a jar of Jif and asphalt.

So here, here! 3.90/5.00 Boogie Oogie Oogies in my book.
