Day 8: Flying Dog University Night School Hazy IPA

Why We Got It: Looking to add a hazy into the mix as they are quite trendy right now now . Plus, none of us have had this one before.

What Flying Dog Has To Say About It: Not much as this is a collaboration ofosorts. According to Untappd: "If  it’s hazy, does that mean it’s unfiltered? (Most likely.) And what does New England have to do with it? (Not necessarily anything.) With a commitment to higher beer education, Flying Dog University is breaking down the trend of unfiltered IPAs right into your glass. As hops have more interaction with the yeast, which would normally be removed before filtration, you get aroma and flavor profiles that are different than your average filtered IPA."

ABV: 6.2 %
IBU: 35

Fun Fact: Flying Dog University is a thing, and you can enroll. According to Flying Dog, "Geek out on an in-depth look at the brewing process, fermentation, yeast management, quality control and packaging that will end with a tasting of new releases, pilot batches and vintage beers."

  1. Been a long day. Feels like midnight, but it's only 7:40 and I'm still first on here. After waking up with a sinus headache that felt like a hangover, Ro and I made it to Jailbreak by Noon. Conveniently located close to the climbing zone birthday party in Laurel we were forced to drive to. Anyway, I avoided cheating by drinking next Friday's beer. Met up with our blog administrator. Good times were had by all. Farmed the kids out to Mount Vernon with the in-laws and cracked this open on the couch while watching Crazy Rich Asians. Anyway, on to the beer. I like this. Big fan of anything with "hazy" and "ipa" in the title. Wee bit bitter, but I liked it. A lot. Would definitely buy a sixer of this. Ro said it was really grapefruity which is definitely true, but I like my beers and white wines to be heavy on the grapefruit. Winner in my book. Maryland represent! I give it 4 out of 5 Larry Hogans.

    1. On another note, I might consider pursuing a graduate degree at FDU (and no, I don't mean Farleigh Dickinson). I wonder if that would give me a few more points on the civil service ranking system. It should.

  2. Agree with Bill on the bitterness. Too much. But enjoyable. Almost saisonish. There's a new adjective for you. You're welcome.

Looking like an ATL Utd title. Interesting fan cam angle

  4. I'm not a big fan. The guy at the local liquor store had suggested earlier and I didn't really like it then either. Too sour or whatever that flavor is. I don't like the hazy beers in general, so for its style I can tell its a pretty good one. It's just not my taste. I give it a 2.

  5. I enjoyed this one more than I expected to. Wasn't sure about the hazy and was not a big fan of any of the Flying Dogs last year. But I liked the fruitiness and I didn't think it was very bitter at all. This may actually be my favorite of the past few days, although probably behind the Atlas Rye.

  6. There will always be a special place in my heart for Flying Dog. It was among the first craft breweries I tasted upon entering Maryland and I liked them so much that I used their beer for my wedding. Even with all that, my hopes were not sky high for this. They have some good random beers here and there but also ones that are pretty sad. This beer was refreshingly good though. I thought it would be a sorry attempt at trying to do a trendy, hazy beer but it ended up being pretty good. 4 out of 5 for me.

  7. Mid-day pour. Right out of the bottle. Not a fan. Really, umm, what’s the word? Umm, hazy. 2 Troy McClures (you may remember him from such movies as The Boatjacking of Supership ‘79 and “P” is for Psycho)

  8. I like souriness and bitterness, buy this combo didn't work as well for me. I found a grapefruity aftertaste that simply was not to my liking. I will still root for all sports teams coming out of Flying Dog University (especially against Northwestern), but this beer didn't do it for me. 2.5 out of 5 FDU fight songs.
