Anchor's Summer Beer

Crisp and cool as a San Francisco summer.

The crisp, clean flavors of Anchor Summer ® Beer are refreshingly light, a thirst-quenching American-style filtered wheat beer.

Released each year in advance of the summer season, Anchor Summer ® Beer is an all-malt beer, with over 50% of its malt derived from malted wheat. It is fermented with a traditional top-fermenting "ale" yeast, yielding a clean, balanced flavor that highlights the refreshingly light flavor of malted wheat. The head is unusually abundant due to the natural protein deposits of wheat, with a thick consistency similar to meringue.

First brewed in the summer of 1984, Anchor Summer ® Beer is the first American wheat beer in modern times. Anchor Summer ® Beer is intended to be a lighter beer for those who don’t want to sacrifice tradition or character.

First Brew:  1984
First Bottling:  1984

ABV:  4.5%
Availability:  April-Oct

Malt:  Blend of 2-Row Pale & Malted Wheat

Hops:  Goldings & Glacier

  1. Terrible! Perhaps I had a 'bad' bottle? For a relatively mainstream beer it was wretched. I had to knock this out at 12:01 since I am flying on Sunday. The blogging is losing steam, let's go people.

  2. After Bolts' late night review, I was expecting a really bad beer. Instead, it was the best tasting beer of the summer 24 days of beer. I think it's my favorite so far due to its flavor being a little less dominant.

    1. agreed. I rated this beer the best of the bunch if for no other reason then it was the least shitty tasting.

  3. Interesting beer. Huge head almost overflowed my cup. Taste was very light and not one flavor over powering. No bad aftertaste. Went down smooth. I liked the malty taste but it was not dominating. Can't really describe it other than this would be an awesome beer for the beach where you could pound this and enjoy it. Non-descript.

  4. I wasn't looking forward to this beer at all based on the description, as I don't like most wheat beers (they taste like rotten bananas). I was surprised by this and really like it. I agree that this would be perfect on the beach!

  5. Another good beer selection. I first tried Anchor beers earlier this year when I tried Anchor Steam and thought it was good but a rip off of Yuengling. They're seasonal beer surpasses the original, which is hard to do (see fat tire for an example). 9 out of 10.

  6. Drinkable...Really interesting American wheat that doesn't suck. I like it...give me some more flavor though. Perhaps I spoiled my palate by having a sierra after closing tonight. Good beer but just not very exciting. I'll never buy a bottle of this...but I would have a pint if I ever ran into it on draft.

  7. I think I'm going to avoid all beers that say "malted wheat." I've always found Anchor Steam to be overrated. Just too heavy. I liked this better but still not a fan. Just a preference thing. I still respect the beer. Ro says it tastes just like regular Anchor Steam which "isn't a bad thing."

  8. Wasn't terrible, but wasn't really good either. I'll give it a C. I guess its balance was too malty, not enough hops. I drank 2/3 of it, but then just got tired of it.

  9. Had this late last night, just catching up on the review. I don't mind Anchor Steam, but I just couldn't come up with much to say about this one. I would literally forget about it seconds after I drank it. I guess it wasn't offense, but I found it a totally forgettable and left almost no impression at all.

  10. I really enjoyed this beer. It was probably related to the fact that I was drinking after taking a nice long walk on the beach. It was refreshing.

  11. Finally, a delicious wheat beer! I really enjoyed it and drank it pretty fast. It was light and crisp, exactly what I like to drink in the summer.

  12. I agree with Scott. This beer was OK, yet forgettable. So much that after I drank it, I went in the living room to get on the laptop to write my review and forgot to do it. I'll give it a 7 of 10, C
