Brooklyn Summer Ale is a modern rendition of the "Light Dinner Ales" brewed in England throughout the 1800's right up until the 1940's. They were also called "luncheon ales" or even "family ales", because they were refreshing and flavorful without being too heavy. We brew our Brooklyn Summer Ale from premium English barley malt, which gives this light-bodied golden beer a fresh bready flavor. German and American hops lend a light crisp bitterness and a citrus/floral aroma, resulting in a beer with a very sunny disposition.

Decided to knock this one out before heading to bed. A bit hoppier than the first two, but not altogether much different. Three days in and nothing has persuaded me to want to buy more, here's hoping Monday brings something more interesting.
ReplyDeletePeople always say that this is the way to drink in the summer...light and citrusy bullshit. I disagree, summer is the time to embrace the natural citrus and flowery crisp refreshment provided by a forcefully dry-hopped IPA. There are also some quality wheat beers (not shock top or blue moon) that are great for the summer. Honestly...I want to taste my beer no matter the season!
DeleteI must have had a skunked beer. This is the first beer in the Dec and now June tasting that I could not finish. I got Fran to taste it as well and she thought it was disgusting. There had to be something wrong with it b/c it tasted nothing like the description. I chalk it up to being skunked - Oh well hope Monday is better

I just finished the previous days beer and i think i like this one much more. There's definitely more taste here and the taste kind of lingers in my mouth after...not bad. Still sitting on my deck with a slight breeze trying to enjoy this beer after a long day in the sun. It's much more enjoyable now that the WIFE has gone inside and I'm just out here on the deck with Bailey (my dog) relaxing. I mean I just got home from all day in the sun running around and all I want to do is drink beer and relax and she wants me to hang up shit in the house and do other things that I don't want to do...WTF. Can a newly married man just relax and drink a beer in peace on his deck with a slight breeze. Might have to switch to liquor to get through the night.
ReplyDeleteForgot to rate it...8 out of 10, B-
DeleteI didn't think this beer had any real distinct taste and was really light for a beer with 5% alc. That said, I did enjoy it and could have a few more. I give this beer a 7 out 10.
ReplyDeleteGeez, how many times is Tony going to say he was in the sun all day and now there's a slight breeze on the deck? Anyway, I really liked this beer! The smell was much stronger than the taste and I enjoy lighter beers so this was a nice surprise. I'm outside on the deck as well relaxing, just as newly married couples should. I wish I had another one of these Brooklyn ale's.
ReplyDeleteBMoore, where are you?
wish i had a few more to close out the weekend. i'll be on the look out for this one at the store.
ReplyDeletecan't wait for the double trouble and corruption IPAs this week!
This is Amy. I sipped this beer and I think it is the best beer in the entire world! It could be because I have not drank a beer in nine months but I give this 5 stars/100 points. Yum!:). This is Ivan and I am not a fan. It tastes like a Pale Ale and I am not a fan of Pale Ales.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it was the special malts or the advertised "bready" flavor, but I sure didn't like this. Suprises me since I'm usually a big fan of Brooklyn beers. Ro gave me her half and got a Goose Island Honker's Ale out of the fridge and said that when breastfeeding she "could not waste her minimal beer quota on this".
ReplyDeleteSince this is a "family ale," is it OK for my 3 year old to drink it? Maybe he would've liked it more.
ReplyDeleteThis beer is symbolic of what is wrong with "summer" beers. So light, that it took me half the bottle to figure out what they were going for. The citrus bitterness is there, but it is so fleeting and timid it was hard to appreciate. It is fine, but it could have been really good. I want a beer to really make a statement, but this one didn't do it.
Not good; not awful. C's all the way round on this Brooklyn. It just seemed flabby. Not crisp. Very forgettable.
ReplyDeleteIf Brooklyn Summer Ale was a pizza, it'd be like a Margharita pizza or some shit. Just way too many flavors that don't belong. Beer, like pizza, is pretty awesome as long as you don't mess with the basic formula too much.
ReplyDeleteIt seems awfully lemony and I just don't see the need for lemony beer. There's no doubt in my mind that lemon is great to spray on a crabcake and it seems popular in floor waxes but I just don't need any in my beer.
Anyways, it's not completely horrible and if a truly good beer wasn't available I'd be willing to pound these. But this is probably true of every beer ever made. Except maybe Red White and Blue. That stuff was truly awful.
Total brain freeze on the first two days of the 24 beers of summer. I'll be catching up over the next 20 minutes.
Tony - totally funny post and Katy's retort was just as funny.
Amy congrats on the first taste of beer in a long time.
I knew I was in trouble when I read above that this beer is "Excellent with salads." This was the worst one so far. Citrusy crap. I may crack a Miller Lite to wash the taste out of my mouth.
ReplyDeleteI though this one was just fine. Classic summer beer. Could drink lots of them while sitting by the pool. It would be delicious with a salad.
ReplyDeleteDrank this one in a parking lot 1/2 mile from Nissan pavilion where my jeep just decided not to run anymore. It did a great job washing down the bitter disappointment that is inevitable when your vehicle lets you down in a time of need. Jeep started up 30 min later with no further problems...she is a temperamental old girl. Concert was pretty good and so was the beer. I'd drink a sixer of this on any summer day.
ReplyDeleteI liked this one. Definitely more of a linger at the back of the tongue, but not in a bad way. Of course I believe this was number 4 of the day...
